Tomorrow, we celebrate the Philippine Independence Day.

When we waved our flag on June 12th 1898, we declared our freedom from 300 years of colonial oppression. 300 years of having fellow Filipinos turned against each other. 300 years of being called “Indio”—“an inferior race.”

We never were, and never will be an inferior race. Our ancestors had formed communities, alliances, networks of trade and commerce; Diplomacy with our Asian neighbors. They possessed their own leadership and governance. Codes. Language. Culture. Their creativity, ingenuity and resilience is what has been passed into the very core of every Filipino today.

Subsequent foreign occupations, years of political turmoil, and the wounds of division caused by our experiences seem to have made many of us believe that we occupy a small space in this world. But let us not forget that many of us are the driving forces in industries around the world— from healthcare, to media, arts, engineering—and are even the backbone of household and care support, on which major economies rely.

In postcolonial discussions, one often wonders about “National Identity.” I’ve stopped trying to define it in a box—because what we have is a special tapestry. Over 7,000 islands with unique dialects, cultural influences, and ways of thinking. With so much to offer, what we can do is only limited by what we believe.

The freedom we will need is that of our mind. We are stronger than we believe ourselves to be.

[2,000,001] 在去年反修例運動期間拍下的這幅作品最近在意大利Siena Awards 航拍攝影大賽中獲選為人物組亞軍。照片紀錄了2019年6月16日二百萬港人上街遊行反對修訂《逃犯條例》並提出五大訴求，拍攝當天的震撼與感動至今仍歷歷在目。這不僅是香港回歸後的一個轉捩點，也是屬於香港人歷史性的一刻。作品將於下月在意大利Siena展出。

[2,000,001] Great honour to have this aerial work selected as the Runner-up in the Siena Awards - DRone AWards (People). The image captured the moment when two million Hongkongers took to the streets on 16 June 2019, calling on the government to withdraw the controversial extradition bill and respond to their five demands. Still remember how deeply moved I was while shooting the sea of black flooded the city. Not only is it a turning point in Hong Kong’s postcolonial history, but also a historic moment that belongs to Hong Kong people. The picture will be exhibited next month in Siena, Italy.

Luke commentary, July, 2018. The biggest work so far. 608 pages.

三個充滿張力的治學重點影響我們今天運用正典福音書：一）希望依照當時的社會、歷史處境看待古代敘事。二）意識到敘事需要被視為一體，且特別留意當中的文學特色。三）把敘事應用到今天的處境。以上差異甚大的重點容易導致跟時代脫節的閱讀，未能把古代文字的威力傳遞給新一代讀者。著重歷史的閱讀會變成一種重新建構「歷史」事件的癖好，以為這些建構會隨之促成今天的應用。以純粹文學入手，則會依賴新約聖經世界所陌生的現代文學研究手法。把聖經應用在今天處境者，會把解釋文本化為表達自己對社會、政治的想法。未能把這三個重點融合成一個詮釋系統的話，會導致混亂、沮喪，甚至激起反對細讀古代文本的控訴。

曾博士不囿於以上困境，更力求突破，特意在整本《天國演說家：從言說行動理論看路加福音》提出耳目一新的方法來閱讀文本――言說行動理論（Speech Act Theory）。這方法超越文本的意思，著重文本意圖做出什麼效果。運用這方法，忠於文本歷史的閱讀就不會受限於現代主義（modernist）學理有關歷史準確度的概念；基於文本的閱讀就不會受制於跟文本無關的框架；讓文本對今天讀者說話的決心就不會給過時的研究前提和分類擺佈。總的來說，本書打破「屬靈」讀經和「政治」讀經這錯誤二分。這就好像神國度終末的介入，打破信徒群體內外的體制，這些體制控制著毀譽規條、權責問題、忠信生活的模式。

本書不求找出運用聖經的終極方法，反而意識到修辭的力量，開啟各種可以用來解經的方法。這修辭力量在文本跟古代帝國和今天後殖民（postcolonial）脈絡互動中發揮作用。我們不能再相信「西方」解經者會幫我們排除所有文化前提、「客觀地」讀經。同時，來自世界大多數地區的解經者不應遭貶斥為只會狹隘地讀經。提出以上各種可以用來解經的方法，曾博士功不可沒。

若數近十年華人聖經研究界最多產的學者，想無人能出曾思瀚博士左右。據我了解，曾博士迄今已出版了逾五十本中英文作品，這一本《天國演說家：從言說行動理論看路加福音》繼續見證曾博士一直為開啟華人神學和教會聖經識見（biblical literacy）和眼界而付出的心力。開識見，是因為曾教授孜孜引導讀者進深認識聖經的文化和背景，以至能離開那習以為常、甚至理所當然，卻未經細想或信守的經文解釋。啟眼界，是因為曾博士致力引進西方研究最新的發展和成果，以讓未諳外語的讀者、聖經和神學入門者按圖索驥，提升閱讀聖經的能力。曾博士在《天國演說家》整合近年路加福音的研究，這是一本為那嘗試了解路加福音和最近研究發展的神學生、專職聖經宣講和教導的牧者而設的參考書，也是渴慕神話語的信徒所不能或缺的書籍。

曾博士在本書嘗試展現如何徵引聖經研究各種鑑別法，透視經文背後的世界（the world behind the text）、呈現經文的世界（the world in the text）、觸動經文前的世界（the world in front of the text），以讓讀者全面和具體明白經文、投入經文、並受經文塑造，實在難能可貴。在已經發表的福音書研究裡，曾博士成功展示敘事鑑別法對研讀福音書的貢獻和力量。在這本新作，除了敘事鑑別法，曾博士藉修辭鑑別法（rhetorical criticism）的觀點，更具體地探索作者的意圖，使讀者對路加福音的了解，並不止於歷史的陳述和記錄。近年學術界基於遠古「口傳」文化習俗，探討「口傳」對傳播經文目的和效果的作用。誠然，「口傳」不僅旨在傳遞文字資訊，更多的是塑造信念、激發行動――言說與行為緊密相連。曾博士引入言說行動理論（speech-act theories），以詮釋學理論說明經文的力量，在文字和生活之間架起了橋梁。的確，言說行動理論顯示語言的力量，並非紙張上的文字或腦袋裡的觀念，而是態度、決定、行動。曾博士的新作實在有建構新約倫理的貢獻和影響。最後，上世紀西方學界討論甚為熾熱的「後殖民觀點」（postcolonial perspective），鮮為華人福音派聖經學者所提及或徵引。這無疑是頗為諷刺的。畢竟，以亞洲處境而言，大部份華人所在的地方，都是曾經或依然、直接或間接「被殖民」。「後殖民」的詮釋觀點，無疑是開啟經文的一扇窗、一條鑰匙。然而，在華語聖經研究界，這扇窗似乎還是關閉著，鑰匙依然有待使用。曾博士的新作，不是象牙塔的夢囈，而是在具體生活裡面對權勢的論述。

我相信曾博士的新作，必定燃起熟悉路加福音的讀者的熱情和渴望，重新聆聽路加的信息。
