I've always loved the myths of fantastical watery creatures who swim in the shallows. The deep sea can be fascinating, but make no mistake - the rivers where the rusalka dwell, or the streams from which nymphs and naiads rise trailing water - can be equally compelling. And equally fatal!
Allow me to add to this the myth of the Koi Empress: equal parts childlike and imperious, equal parts vulnerable and dangerous; just as likely to sing your wounds to recovery and sate you with sweet salves as she is to drag you just beneath the lotus-gilded surface. A mortal, after all, needs only about two inches of water to drown...
