🇭🇰 🇨🇳 As the CCP celebrates 100 years in power, Hong Kong marks the 24th anniversary of the city's handover to China from British rule and one year since the imposition of the national security law. With Hong Kong's top leader Carrie Lam in Beijing for the Party centenary, her deputy John Lee oversaw a flag-raising ceremony to mark the handover. He defended the national security law as police patrolled the city. In just one year, the city has been transformed with the introduction of national security education in schools, the arrests of 117 people including pro-democracy lawmakers and students, and the closure of the city's popular pro-democracy, anti-Beijing paper Apple Daily.
