Before you call us ungrateful/selfish/entitled; I hope you realize that this goes beyond our career progression, opportunities for further training or hazard leaves. This fight is also about you. Yes, you, the rakyat and all those who rely on our public healthcare facilities. What affects us… affects you, too. How are we supposed to help you if our cries for equipment, for funding, for manpower, for equal treatment, for better working conditions are swept under the carpet? We’ve stretched ourselves thin given the limited resources and played our part… but truly, your healthcare workers can only do so much. How long can we bear to see gasping patients on the floor, with a face mask connected to an oxygen tank, shared with 4 others? How many more children will be orphaned? How many more will we have to see go before us? If not from COVID, from other illnesses because right now, hospitals are flooded and people are terrified to seek help, even if they need it. If anything, this is gaslighting on a national scale by those in power. The first step in solving a problem is to address its presence. Instead, they’ve been dismissed as a publicity stunt and lagak ngeri. These issues have been brewing for years and the cracks were always there. I’m sorry it has to take a pandemic to finally push our system to its collapse. Mind you, those who participated in the hartal only took 30 minutes of their day to strike. Compared to that, even some of your lunch breaks are longer. Those serving in CAC/ICU/HDU and COVID units continue to work. Know that we do this because we care. We protest peacefully, holding on to the hope that the noise we make today will result in actual changes for all Malaysians to benefit from in the future. 🏴
