The answer is fear and centuries of misogyny and misunderstanding. A study found that 65% of women are uncomfortable with using words like vagina and vulva, instead referring to it as “down there”. 45% of women don’t talk about their vaginal health with friends or family (I am the 65% stats), let alone their doctor. 50% of young women can’t correctly label a vagina on a medical diagram. I teach my children the scientific words to describe their genitals after attending a talk on Sexual Harassment. The reason why most parents fail to see that their child was being sexually abused is due to this stigma as well as the improper usage of the word to describe their privates. “Karipap” “Berbird” were words taught to these children as tots and so when an “Uncle” touched their genitals, they tried telling their parents but it didn’t really register. “Ibu..haritu ada orang pegang Karipap adik” Let’s try it differently. “Ibu … Uncle tu pegang kemaluan/ faraj / vulva/ zakar/ vagina / penis saya!” I am pretty sure there would be an immediate reaction, right? A healthy vagina is paramount to a women’s physical, mental and emotional health. It is INCREDIBLY important that we talk about them and normalise the language. How are we to know what’s normal and what’s not if everyone is so vague about it? Some of the teens I speak to don’t even know that they could pregnant in their first sexual encounter! Who are you and what is your character like? Khuluq is the way you become, who you truly are no matter what. Some laugh all the time, some talk a lot or are quiet or some easily get offended and so on. The Prophet's (ﷺ) Khuluq was the Qur'an; he became who Allah wanted him to be, he had the highest, best and most noble character, he was a walking Qur'an, he was sent to perfect good character and the quality of his akhlaq was even mentioned in the previous scriptures. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) did not take any personal revenge, he didn't hold any grudges , he was honest, patient, well-wishing and forgiving and treated everyone, even his enemies with respect and kindness until they became companions! SubhanAllah! He had good Akhlaq all the time, in ease, in hardships and when evil was done to him, he responded, with good. What you don't fake, is your Khuluq [character], so what is your Khuluq? Here's a tip: to know your character, ask your closest friends, spouse or family members! Get to know the real you and work on imporving your Khuluq, do your best to follow the footsteps of our beloved Prophet (ﷺ). - Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Fear Allah wherever you are, follow a bad deed with a good deed and it will erase it, and behave with good character towards people.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1987] - It is mentioned in the lengthy story about Sa’d ibn Hishaam ibn ‘Aamir, when he came to Madeenah and went to ‘Aisha r.a. and asked her about some matters. He said: I said: O Mother of the believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). She said: Don't you read the Qur'an? I said: Yes. Upon this she said: The character of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was the Qur'an. He said: I felt inclined to get up and not ask anything (further) till death. Narrated by Muslim (746)
