Anyway, this week I spent living in the remote Mayan village of Señor, Quintana Roo, located in the middle of the jungle in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, which is also known for such international tourist hotspots as Cancun and Tulum. Having seen my videos practicing the Mayan language here in Mexico, some people from the village invited me out here to experience true Mayan culture. So I decided to spend a week living in the village with a local Mayan family, practicing my Spanish and Mayan and just seeing what their traditional lifestyle is like. It was a totally different experience from being in Cancún or Tulum and it completely blew me away!

In Mexico I spent some time learning the Yucatec Maya language, which is indigenous to the Yucatán Peninsula and has been spoken in this area for thousands of years by the Mayan people. Even though lots of people still speak it, the younger generation is forgetting it and it was really interesting to go around and try and speak what I could speak. If you are interested in learning to speak the amazing Mayan language and help preserve Mayan culture, or just if you want to learn Spanish online or in-person with good local organizations, you can check out the schools I learned with here:
