A May Ball is a ball that takes place at any of the colleges of the University of Cambridge and it is normally held in June even though it is called May Ball! They are extravagant, luxurious and lavish formal affairs, requiring black tie or white tie. Famous acts like Mumfords and Sons and The Hoosiers normally headline the ball. Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf from Lord of the Rings) actually came to the ball the year I went (along side a few other famous faces) but I didn’t get to see him because he was in the ‘VIP’ area obviously - but I managed to take a picture with him just a few months ago, ha! He matriculated in Cambridge in 1950s. The tradition of May Balls in Cambridge started in the 1830s with the first official one being the First and Third Trinity Boat Club May Ball in 1866. It normally lasts from 6pm until 6am the morning after. ‘Survivors photographs’ are normally taken at 6am of those who last until the morning. This is our survivors pic in 2014. Try to spot me in that mass of people. 😂💋😂 #throwback #trinitymayball2014 #cambridgealumni #mayball #workhardplayharder
