When I was a kid, the idea of heroes was mixed. I rarely could find heroes that looked like me. In reality, our heroes were often martyrs, and in fantasy, the ones that existed were often considered to be other, and limited to being heroes for only people who looked like me. The stories were small, confined to the world of a stereotypical urban community. The stories were small, the troubles were small, our heroes were small. When Black Panther came out, it was not only the story of a hero and people who looked like me, but their world was a nation, and by the context, it existed in a larger world of characters of all races from not only around the world but the whole galaxy. In this fantasy, Wakanda was a rich nation, and it didn’t exist only in their story, but would be a pivotal landmark in a story that involved every other character in that fictional universe. In seeing Chadwick Boseman’s body of work there is so much to celebrate but still, Black Panther stands out. He was a symbolic king for a diaspora without a home. His character unified people, and put our stories into a larger shared narrative. I am grateful for the chance to feel that connection. I am grateful for the validation he gave us with his beautiful portrayal and his dignity in his life. I get that people not raised under circumstances similar to those in the US might not understand, but the gift of being seen, acknowledged, and appreciated means a lot. So for that reason, I will make sure to go out and support the next story “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”. It’s another chance for another community to be included in the larger story. It’s a chance for us to celebrate the beauty of culture, and relate to heroes of all types. These are difficult times, but I hope this next story receives great success as Black Panther did. It feels good to be connected. Unified by a “king”.

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ I got to know @sitisarahraissuddin in the early 2000’s when we were both coming up in the industry, I’ve always remembered her to be very humble, kind, cheerful and she too made her hijrah towards Allah, a loving righteous sister and mother. The news of her passing this morning has come as a surprise to all of us, and it should serve as a reminder for us to also prepare for our appointed time. This life is just a pit stop, before we head to the real eternal life in the Here-after. According to the latest polls, 80% of respondents believe that the authorities should not build a Fudan branch. Chinese students in Hungary are often recruited to be CCP spies.
