【TEDtalk 選物】no. 7 不理性，有道理

◉ 猴子不理性 irrationality
演化生物學家 Sarah Brosnan 與她的指導教授 Frans de Waal 在2003年發表了針對捲尾猴做的一系列行為觀察研究，他們人工製造了炎涼世態，讓兩隻捲尾猴經歷了同工不同酬的處境：同樣的工作內容， A 猴得到好吃的葡萄做獎賞， B 猴卻只拿到小黃瓜。

捲尾猴其實是喜歡小黃瓜的，比起乾燥的飼料 (monkey chow)，小黃瓜已經算是美食，但多汁甜美的葡萄卻更得猴歡心。受到差別待遇的 B 猴本來高高興興地吞下小黃瓜，但看到 A 猴拿到葡萄，不甘心的 B 猴竟把手上的小黃瓜砸向實驗員，寧願不吃也不願被視為次等
猴，令人動容。


◉ 人也不理性 irrationality
像捲尾猴這樣的丟食犧牲，在人身上其實也會發生。某個研究讓參與者做假設性的選擇：

a) 年薪三百萬（但身邊的其他人年薪七百五十萬）
b) 年薪一百五十萬（身邊的人平均年薪七十五萬）

實驗結果顯示，有超過半數的人，會選擇 B，也就是寧願犧牲一年一百五十萬，也不要不如別人。

這樣的選擇，似乎不太理性，畢竟小黃瓜雖然是二等獎，但 #有總比沒有好 ，同樣地，決斷地放棄一百五十萬，朋友知道了也一定笑你傻
「成熟理性的人才不會這樣死腦筋。」


◉ 建立公平合作，需要你的不理性 cooperation and fairness

但不理性的人呀， Sarah Brosnan 是站你這邊的，她對這樣的現象提出了一個解釋，她認為不理性是維護公平原則 (leveling the playing field) 的重要機制：猴群與人類，因為需要集體生活才能提高生存繁衍率，進而演化出了維護合作關係的傾向。

短期來看，雖然拒絕小黃瓜看似失去好處，但這樣的行為正是在 #主張公平的重要性 ，既是果，也是因，因為基因裡埋了對「公平」的執著，所以你才會生氣，也因為你的抗議，不公的情況才容易降低，長期而言，互信才能繼續運作，讓群體維持合作關係


更有趣的是， Sarah Brosnan 也提到，靈長類不僅很容易在意自己受到不公平待遇，有時也會注意到自己拿到太多好處 (unfairly benefiting) ，她觀察到黑猩猩 (chimpanzee) 有時看到其他同伴只拿到小黃瓜，會自願放棄美味的葡萄。
人類也是一樣，我們之中有一些人，看起來很傻，明明自己過得夠好，卻主動犧牲時間或資源，去幫助其他處境不利的族群（以及動物），這看似不理性的選擇，其實讓整個社群（與地球環境）更加願意互信，讓合作得以延續。

影片裡 Sarah Brosnan 自問自答：
演化不是應該適者生存嗎？全拿好處的人應該才是對的、容易活下去的吧！
(If evolution is about survival of the fittest, wouldn’t it make sense to grab any advantage you can get?)

她的回應是，非也，就算我全拿好處，得到的單人之利，是比不上我們互信合作，集眾人之力所能共創的成果
(I do better if I get more than you, sure. But best of all is if you and I can work together and get more than either one of us could have gotten on our own.)

如果你一位願意放下自己的葡萄優勢的人，願意向頂層階級抗議為何其他人得不到公平，必定身邊有人會笑你傻、要你顧好自己就好，這時請你不要生氣，記得把我的文章存起來，到時再讀一遍，提醒自己：
演化需要時間，不是人人都趕得上黑猩猩。

Fear, Panic, Irrationality

Viruses striking the heart of everyone.
Tbh I wasn’t even a germaphobe to start with; I don’t think showering is essential, 3 second rule don’t exist in my world (yes I pick up the piece of something my kids drop on the floor, blow it and put it back on their plate) but when the corona virus first hit our homeland I’ve been getting all jittery over the slightest things. I wash my hands and sanitise it so many times a day my gel manicure is starting to wear off
.
For a while I was just mindlessly waiting out to see if any brides are going to cancel my bookings and get all panicky about my income depleting
.
Though shameful, I do admitted that I even thought of stockpiling during the frenzy when Dorscon Orange is announced. But heng my hubby managed to knock some sense into me if not our savings would be dumped into these irrational spendings.
.
I’m still afraid, very afraid but I no longer want to sit around and wait like something’s gonna happen.
What PM Lee said “Take sensible precautions, help one another, stay calm, and carry on with our lives”
We can brace through SARS, we can survive through this.
