Old me: Such light coloured leggings are gonna make me look fat. Maybe I should go for darker colours. 😩 Current me: I love these colours and I like how they look with my skates! I’ll wear them! 🛼 Yah, honestly, I get that I’m far from the idealised body type and this is downright puzzling for many people to see someone so outrightly heavy-set in clothes that are usually shown and worn publicly by slimmer individuals. Was I insecure? Confirm lah. Sometimes I will wonder if I should pull my tights up and if my rolls are causing distress to other people. But then I think to myself, no one bats an eyelid of a hot body in this exact get up. My outfit isn’t the problem. It’s perception and lack of representation. So yes, like most ladies, I am conscious of myself. But I’m fighting everyday: ✨ The perception that I can’t appreciate my body until it’s kicked into “shape” ✨The mindset that just because I’m heavier means I’m inactive ✨ The belief that I have to hide myself until I look “socially acceptable” I’m not hiding and waiting anymore and if this resonates and you’ve felt this way, this is your sign that it’s time to come out in the open and allow yourself to be. I know people like to show their photos of years ago vs now to see how much they’ve changed, mostly more glamorous, more trendy, more confident - which is good! However I tend to look at my younger self in a different light, and rather not compare her to who I am now. I’m very proud of her, and sometimes I wish I could have her free spirited mindset, her courage to just go, and do things without thinking too much. Here she was, only 16 (half my age now), just left home a year to study abroad half way across the globe from her family & friends. She stopped crying, missing home. And chose to move on with new journey, to make new friends, to learn more. She was insecure at times, yet followed her guts to slowly gain her confidence. It all started there, her adulthood. She had no makeup, used no skincare, didn’t even have Instagram but a big old laptop to do her assignments. How did she survive? Youngsters might ask. To which she would laugh, and said she spent her time learning, getting to know real people, running on the field laughing with her friends, following no apps, definitely not care who follows or unfollows her, or whatsoever. I know it’s a different times now, people might care so much about what people think, or rate them on social media, which is ridiculous. Because if you care so much that you stop living for yourselves, or loving the real versions of who you are, then what’s your point of existing? I understand it gets hard sometimes to not think about it, but remember: do what you love, love what you do. Social media is a tool, a channel to connect us, but it does NOT define who you are.
