The many similar sounding Mandarin characters make it ideal for any number of homophonic puns. It’s one of the fun and interesting aspects of learning Mandarin.

The Speak Mandarin Campaign has done much to encourage the use of Mandarin over the last 40 years. But in today’s English-speaking society, many Chinese families (Malays and Indians too) use English as their main language at home. So although most young Chinese Singaporeans can understand and speak Mandarin, they are not always fluent. We are losing our bilingual competitive edge.

The Speak Mandarin Campaign must respond to this. I encourage Singaporeans to maintain Singapore’s bilingual advantage. We have to make the effort to use Mandarin in our daily lives, keep it alive and preserve the uniqueness of Singaporean Mandarin.
