2018-08-30 18:38:45A relentless Bethel High School defense ended Hampton's 14-year run of Peninsula District football titles, sparking the unbeaten Bruins to a 9-3 victory and the 1991 championship Friday night.
A standing room-only crowd in excess of 10,000 at Darling Stadium saw Bethel combine blitzing tactics to pressure Hampton quarterback Fred Brown and aggressive pass defense to settle the battle of unbeaten teams.
Allen Iverson's 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kelly Rodgers broke a 3-3 deadlock with 4:57 left in the third period.
The Bethel defense, which held Hampton without a touchdown for the first time in 38 games, snuffed two later Hampton drives in Bruin territory.
The Crabbers (9-1 district, 8-1 overall) threatened a third time, but couldn't beat the clock as time expired with them on the Bethel 10.
''We were determined to put pressure on Brown because he hurt us so much throwing the ball last year,'' Bethel coach Dennis Kozlowski said. ''We did that with the combination of blitzes and excellent coverage by the secondary. Coach Skip Bouchard did an excellent job of mixing the coverages.''
Both teams advance to next Friday's Eastern Region playoffs, Bethel as the second-seeded team in Division 5 and Hampton as the third-seeded squad in Division 6.
Bethel (10-0, 9-0) will host either Indian River or Norcom of the Southeastern District, depending on the outcome of today's Norcom-Cradock game. Norcom (8-1) will face the Bruins if it wins today.
Hampton will play Eastern District champion Granby (5-5) in Norfolk.
''Time didn't run out on us,'' Hampton coach Mike Smith said. ''We had a whole game to get it in and we didn't. They played well and we were unable to move the ball like we thought we would. We played well defensively, but just didn't get it done on offense.''
Linebacker Tim Johnson was the catalyst of Bethel's defensive success. His numerous blitzes helped pressure Brown into a season-high three interceptions, two by Brian Bean.
Johnson's biggest play was tackling Bryan Milo for a 1-yard loss on a third-and-goal situation at the Bethel 1 with just more than two minutes left in the first half. Hampton settled for Pat Welch's tying field goal on fourth down.
''Johnson got great penetration on that play,'' Kozlowski said. ''Defensive guard Rodney Epperly was responsible for stopping Adam Dunbar for no gain on the preceding play.''
Iverson's decisive touchdown pass to Rodgers came on a second-and-10 situation at Hampton's 25.
''It's a play we had success with early in the season where Iverson fakes to the fullback inside and goes to Rodgers down the sideline,'' Kozlowski said.
''Kelly made a great catch on the ball.''
It was Rodgers' eighth touchdown reception in the last five games.
''Walter Ford had good coverage on him on the touchdown,'' Smith said. Rodgers ''just made a good move on the ball.''
The Bruins played without two key players - leading rusher Steve Rimpsey, who was out with an injury, and guard-linebacker Kareem Woods, who was serving a one-game suspension due to his ejection from last week's Lafayette game.
Shelly Ellison, Hampton's season-leading rusher, returned to the starting lineup after a one-game absence with a dislocated shoulder.
He edged Iverson for game rushing honors with 64 yards on 21 attempts. Iverson totaled 60 yards on nine carries.
Bethel scored the game's first points, on the first field goal of senior Darryl Coffie's career from 28 yards with 9:02 left in the second quarter.
Iverson's fourth-down completion for 9 yards to Marlon Anderson for a first down at the Hampton 19 was the key play of drive.
Hampton's field goal was set up when Bean fumbled at Bethel's 15 after intercepting a Brown pass at the 11.
''There were some miscues, but it was an excellent football game,'' Kozlowski said.

2007-07-02 11:40:07Allen Iverson was healthy enough to dazzle the Sacramento Kings and push the Philadelphia 76ers to the top of the NBA.
Iverson scored 46 points with a whirling array of beautiful shots, and Aaron McKie, who had a triple-double, hit a 3-pointer to break a tie with 39 seconds left in overtime as the 76ers earned the NBA's best record with a 107-104 victory over the Kings on Saturday.
The game matched the teams with the NBA's best records entering January, but the 76ers (21-8) jumped ahead early with a blistering first quarter and never trailed the Kings (20-8) despite several nip-and-tuck minutes in regulation and a tense overtime.
Iverson, who also had nine rebounds and nine assists, drove the lane and passed to McKie in the corner for the go-ahead shot. Sacramento couldn't score on its last two possessions, and Jon Barry's 3-pointer with a second left was short.
With Iverson's artistry and a dominant rebounding performance, the Sixers won their NBA-best 14th road game and snapped Sacramento's nine-game home winning streak. McKie had 19 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds in Philadelphia's first win at Arco Arena in 11 years.
Iverson missed a game last week with a dislocated right shoulder and also is nursing a left hip pointer and a sore right elbow. But the 1999 NBA scoring champion used the nationally televised meeting of the NBA's conference leaders to show he's healthy and ready to make the Sixers better than they've ever been in his career.
Peja Stojakovic scored a career-high 33 points for the Kings, and he hit four straight free throws in overtime which tied it at 104 with 54 seconds left. Sacramento is 13-2 at home, with both losses coming in overtime.
Chris Webber, fighting a case of stomach flu, had 29 points and 10 rebounds but missed a potential game-winning jumper with five seconds left in regulation.
After trailing the entire game, the Kings outscored the Sixers 32-15 in the fourth quarter thanks to 11 points by Stojakovic _ including three straight 3-pointers _ and Bobby Jackson's solid defense on Iverson.
Sacramento pulled within one with five minutes to play and tied it at 96 on Webber's driving layup with 2:01 left. It was tied at 98 when Webber missed a jumper with five seconds left, and Jackson's tip attempt missed by an inch.
Philadelphia got the last shot of regulation, but Iverson's 17-footer was off.
The Sixers opened the game in an offensive groove, hitting 14 of their first 20 shots and steadily opening an 18-point lead in the first quarter. Sacramento chipped back in the next two quarters, but they never pulled within striking distance of the lead until the final minutes. Notes:@ McKie and Philadelphia coach Larry Brown received technical fouls late in the first half for protesting a foul call on McKie. Brown nearly came to half-court to scream at referee Jason Phillips. ... The Sixers also were irked that a backcourt violation wasn't called on Jackson with 24 seconds left in regulation. The referees said Jackson didn't have possession of the inbounds pass before he fumbled it into the backcourt. ... Taiwan
Sitting just 180 kilometers (110 miles) off the coast of mainland China, Taiwan's outbreak could have been disastrous. At the end of January, the island was estimated to have had the second-highest number of cases in the world, according to Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
But Taiwan, with a population of around 24 million people, has recorded just over 390 cases and six deaths, and yesterday, it reported no new cases at all. It's managed to do that without implementing severe restrictions, like lockdowns, or school and nursery closures.
In terms of its death toll, at least, Taiwan doesn't even have much of a curve to flatten, more of a line with a couple of rigid steps.
