No sugar, no dairy, no carbs, no oils, no sauces…for the past 6 years these were all things I would tell myself on a daily basis. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was so absorbed in diet culture and spent all my time thinking about my body image. Don’t get me wrong, I love working out and it’s helped my mental health in so many ways but in the depths of my exercise addiction, my list of fear foods would only get longer. I would weigh every single thing I ate, tracking every calorie, every macro in an app. I would constantly say no to plans if it involved eating out, making people come to exercise classes with me instead if we were to catch up. These thoughts are so engrained in my mind, that’s it’s still a journey everyday to push those thoughts away. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was working out 6 / 7 times a week, often twice a day, no matter how I was feeling - chasing the idea of ‘the perfect body.’ But, whilst I gave off this impression to friends and family that I was fit and healthy, I was exhausted - physically and mentally drained. I wouldn’t dream of skipping a day of training thinking it would ruin my progress. And I remember times I would just look at myself in the mirror after training and cry. But the only person who was putting these pressures on me was myself and I thought, will this ever end? ⠀⠀⠀⠀ At the time, being healthy meant being as small as possible - picking at the fat on my body. Just constantly picking myself apart and punishing myself if I ever ate anything which I deemed ‘unhealthy.’ But if you’re constantly restricting yourself and beating yourself up, is that healthy? ⠀⠀⠀⠀ Flash forward to 2021 and my approach to food is more intuitive and you definitely won’t find me punishing myself for eating a piece of cake by immediately signing up to run a 10K at the weekend. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ This year, my new year’s resolution was to take some of the constant pressure I put on myself to train all the time away, taking a more relaxed attitude to my body image and the food I eat as a result.
