    Roughly a year ago, we all met this guy, who seemed harmless enough, and we all started to get close to him. After a few months, he disclosed to all of us that he was dying of cancer. Of course we were all concerned. Broken hearted, even. But after some time, we realized that a lot of the things he told us we just not adding up. and it was quite coincidental that every time somebody in the group had something happy to celebrate about, this guy had a new tragedy to disclose to us, that would trump our joy. After coming into knowledge about more passive-aggressive and manipulative things that this guy did, I started to distance myself away, and then so did the rest of the group. None of us had a falling out with him, we just grew apart amicably.

    Now, this guy has moved to a different town, and has started to peddle his 'me me me pity me" cancer story to everyone there. And of course we are now painted as the group of evil witches who doubted his sincerity and cast him asunder.

    Wouldn't be the first time I got called a 'witch' honey.

    I don't really care what people wanna think of me. I know who my friends are and theirs are the only opinions that count. We distanced ourselves from this guy because we felt he was insincere, selfish and duplicitous, not because we didn't want to support him through his fight with a horrible disease. As a matter of fact, when he told us he had it, all of us banded together and offered to help him though his treatment. It was only when he was inconsistent with his stories that we began to suspect something was amiss, and we shied away.

    Cancer is a topic I am very sensitive about - my mother died of it just a few months ago, and to be someone who uses cancer as a ploy to get attention is fucked up on a whole 'nother level.

    Deep down inside, I hope he is not the attention-hungry liar that we think he is. But maybe I DON'T hope that. Because if he is not lying, then it means he really IS dying of cancer. And nobody deserves that kind of fate, no matter how deceitful and awful they are.
