Or maybe you're not informed correctly. The Islamic dowry is called Mahr. It's an amount of the husbands wealth which is given to the WIFE only. She is in full charge of it. She can demand however much she likes, what she wants (money or something else) and it belongs to HER ALONE. Nobody, not mother nor father or husband is allowed to touch it. • If she wants her dowry the husband can't marry her until he has given it to her. By giving her what she demanded, the marriage contract can be signed. But why do women have the right to get dowry and men don't? So unfair :( First, it's not unfair. الله swt is the most just and fair. Just because you don't understand why, doesn't mean it's not fair. • She has the right to demand Mahr/dowry as an Insurance of the legitimacy of the marriage. Men will think twice if they just want to marry her "for fun" if they have to give her an amount of their wealth. They'll think twice if they want to divorce her after a few weeks, just because it doesn't go as expected. • If he decides to divorce her, she can use the money to provide for herself (even tho he has to provide financial for a period of time anyways). • And at last, to make her HAPPY! My grandma made a living by sewing in the 40s 50s and 60s. It helped raised my mom and her six siblings. The machine was later given to my mom as a dowry. My mom uses it for every sewing work the family need. I remember fondly she sew my first school bag, using a used cloth calendar. I still have that in my cabinet back home. My mom is still using it till this day. She sent me a photo of the machine earlier this week expressing her sentimental connection with it. I shared the story on my social media and got some pretty interesting responses. Many netizens share the sentiment. Many of them still own a sewing machine just like that, with similar stories. Some look at my mom’s picture and thought it is much older than I thought it is. My grandma bought the machine around 1948, after she returned from a trip back to China. It was a used machine. She couldn’t afford new one. As the machine look well used, I thought it would be like max 90 years old. I was wrong. After a thorough research, I found out that every Singer machine has a serial number which can tell the year of production. I told my mom and she found the number engraved on it. The machine was made in 1921. Wow. It’s a century year old.
