In the Neolithic times, Chinese believed that praying to Gods of heaven and earth was necessary for receiving blessings. Particularly, Chinese liked to communicate with Gods through jades because jades were always considered to have super natural powers at that time.

We are in the bronze gallery and I am with a water vessel called Yi. However, it is not just any ordinary water vessel. Around the 9th to 8th century BC in the late Western Zhou Dynasty, it played an important role in a hand-cleansing ritual before the aristocrats were engaged in ceremonies. A servant would pour water from the wide spout for his master to wash hands while another servant would hold a water pan below to catch the water.

Welcome to the bronze gallery. We are looking at a handsome bronze vessel called Gui. It is about the shape and size of a large bowl with a lid and two curved handles. Around 3,000 years ago in the early Western Zhou Dynasty, it was used to offer food to the spirits of the deceased in ritual feasting.
