生者與死者，全然無動於衷

#達米恩赫斯特的藝術作品 #鯊魚 #專欄

1992年，此時倫敦的薩奇美術館正舉辦著青年藝術家節的作品，其中所展示的一個裝置藝術，隨即引起了眾多觀眾群的哄動。
在一個玻璃櫃中，竟然有一條長4.2公尺，被切成三等份的鼬鯊，浸泡在被水稀釋的甲醛溶液裡。

這個前所未見的作品名為《生者對死者無動於衷》，是英國藝術家達米恩·赫斯特（Damien Hirst）最具知名度的作品，並直面帶給觀眾「死亡」的震撼，除了令觀眾開始探討生命在生與死的主軸外，在當代藝術具有非常重大的價值。

不過，此作品日後卻取得相當兩極的評價，並引發一場長年間的巨大爭論。
至於該作品誕生的根因，則要讓我們先追溯其背景時代講起：

20世紀末期是諸多現代藝術崛起的年代，雖然保育觀念尚未全面盛行，但是已經出現提倡多元議題等國際時事的趨勢，此外在各項領域中的『後概念』藝術也極度發展，並影響了各國青年藝術家的發展，其中也包含了YBAs，他們是來自英國、1988年成立的視覺藝術家團體。

YBAs的成員們皆來自倫敦大學金匠學院與皇家藝術學院，除了赫斯特外，還包含翠西·艾敏（Tracey Emin）、安雅·加拉喬（Anya Gallaccio）、查普曼兄弟（Jake and Dinos Chapman）等人。他們所提倡的概念為「震撼戰術」，希望能藉由大膽和荒誕的畫面刺激觀眾的感官，引發的潮流也振興了在倫敦等地的當代商業畫廊，令世人開始重視這些新興的藝術家。

赫斯特早年有著不順遂的人生，也曾一度沉迷於毒品與酒精過，然而憑藉著對藝術的執著與見解，他後將過去的求學經驗、在太平間兼職的工作經歷、對於病理學的喜愛轉化成作品的媒介
也開始大膽使用動物、昆蟲等生物，將其屍體浸泡在甲醛溶液製作成作品。
1991年，赫斯特因認為鯊魚帶有「強大得令人生畏」的氣場，聘請了一名澳洲漁民從赫維灣捕捉一條鼬鯊，耗資約6000英鎊製作《生死》這個作品。
想當然，這種將「生命體藝術化」的表現，特別以動物的特徵訴諸令人不安的意象；除了擺脫藝術原有的形式框架，更拓寬了當代藝術原有的定義，邁向更前衛的體制突破。
評論界對《生死》思想的隱喻充滿著盛譽，也令赫斯特成就在日後奠定了基礎，更在1995年的英國當代藝術大獎榮獲了特納獎。

隨著赫斯特後續製作的一系列作品，包含以兩隻乳牛做成的《母子分離》一顆牛頭構成的《腓力》等，雖觀眾接受的價值觀亦比過往提升不少，然而各界的撻伐卻依然未有停止的狀況
包含部分評論家、動物權益組織、人道團隊等，也對赫斯特的作品抱持的負面評論。

反對者的主張認為：

•「赫斯特以不友善的方式『殺害稀有的鯊魚』作為藝術品，除了踐踏生物且忽視保育觀念，該作品甚至含有非常濃厚的商業操作，因此《生死》的評價實為過譽。」

更具爭議的事，隨著時間日復一日的流逝，《生死》的作品也漸漸損壞，其中甲醛的變質使鯊魚身體開始有腐爛的跡象，最終赫斯特於2006年更換一條從昆士蘭海岸附近被捕的鯊魚。
對於多次修繕與各界的議紛，赫斯特則認為鯊魚的腐爛：「是死亡與腐朽的過程。」
並進一步表示：「作為一個概念藝術家，我覺得作品仍舊是想表達出同樣的含意和價值。」

2004年，《生死》以1200萬美元的價格賣出，是至今當代藝術第二昂貴的成交品。
如同多數藝術家一樣，赫斯特本身就是一位具有爭議行為的人物，也曾多次抄襲而受到質疑，其龐大的影響力到至今也影響著此刻他的人生，同時也有嘗試做出其他不同調性的藝術品，如以日常素材構成的《對逃亡的後天無能》。

至於探討本有其存在價值的「生命」本身，在赫斯特透過藝術品的型式擺佈，到漸漸消逝的關鍵問題似乎也還是未解。
