先週日曜日の、野口美穂さん @mihonog とのインスタライブで、バイリンガル育児をしている方々のお悩みやご質問を伺いながら、私の中で、すごくリフレインしていたフレーズがありました。 それは、この春から学んでいるアドラー心理学の「全ての悩みは人間関係」です。 いやいや、別に人間関係に悩んでいるわけじゃなくて、子供の教育のことで‼️と思われたと思いますが、アドラー心理学的には、やっぱり「人間関係からくる悩み」に入るかな、と思ったんです。 「英語で子供に話しかけると、物珍しい目でみられるので、つい避けてしまう」 「外で子供に英語で話しかけると、自分の英語もネイティブ発音ではないし、間違えているかもしれないので、恥ずかしくなって、やめてしまう」→わかります。 私自身、元々英語ができなかったのでわかるのですが、英語ペラペラの人って「おおっ」と思ってしまいますよね。 また、自分が英語で話していても、明らからに自分は日本人に見えるので、「周りの人はどう思っているのかな」と思いますよね。 流暢な人は「教育ママと思われるのが嫌」、英語が苦手、とおっしゃる人は「下手な英語で話しかけている、と思われるのが嫌」と仰っていたのが印象的でした。 「周囲に英語育児に興味のある人がいない」→ バイリンガル育児が気になったら、そのことをすごく話したいですよね。 私も、なかなか話せる人がおらず、それでこの仕事を始めたのもあります。 私の「親子で英語力アップ！」英語コーチングでは、グループを作って、みんなで交流できるようにしており、確かに、仲間の存在は支えになりますよね。 でも全体的に、伺っていて、「みなさんもっと自由に、周囲を気にせず、ご自分が思うように（バイリンガル育児も）楽しんだらいいんじゃないかな？」と、思いました。 というのも、日本にいながら、日本人の両親のもと、日本の普通に学校に通いつつ（そうではない方々もたくさんいらっしゃると思いますが）子供をバイリンガルにするって、可能だと思いますが、簡単なことでもないので、 みなさんそれぞれのビジョンが実現するため、目標を叶えるためには、（山登りみたいなものだ、とお話ししましたが）もっと自分が歩いている道の花とか景色を楽しんで、自分のペースで歩いて、他のお子様がどれだけ進んでいるとか、他の人にどう思われるか、とか気にせず、我が子と自分が、昨日より半歩でも成長できたら、思いっきり自分たちを褒めてあげたらいいのでは、と。 そうではないと、ながーーーい道のりなので（私は息子が２０代半ばになった時「子供の頃から英語をやっていてよかったなー、今、自然に自由に使えているな」と思ってくれることを１番の目標にしています） せっかくなら楽しんでやった方がいいかな、と。 昔、こんな話を聞いたことがあります。 国民性のイメージを現した、笑い話なんですが。（思い出しながら書いているので、オリジナルと違うところがあったらすみません🙇‍♀️） ✨✨✨ There was a cruise ship. On the ship, people from different countries were travelling. とあるクルーズ船があって、その船には、さまざまな国の人たちが旅をしていました。 Then, unfortunately, a big storm came and the ship hit the big rock. Untrue! #Repost @storiesaboutautism with @make_repost ・・・ It’s 2021 and we’re somehow still publishing rubbish like this… ⠀ Back to the bad old days of autism being caused by ‘refrigerator mothers.’ That it’s something that can be cured if the parents just did more with their child, interacted more and tried harder. ⠀ In case you’ve come across these articles in the last few days, which have been published without question by lots of the media, there is NOTHING you could have done to change the fact your child is autistic. ⠀ It’s nothing to do with the foods you ate when you were pregnant, how often you were on your mobile phone, and definitely not because of the quality of your parenting. ⠀ And I really want you to know and believe that, especially those who are in the early days of your journey. ⠀ What this study, of a limited amount of children, who have now reached the grand age of 3 shows is that a smaller percentage of them would meet the criteria for an autism diagnosis. ⠀ Now, considering how the vast majority of people don’t receive an autism diagnosis until they are older than 3, and how many people make it all the way to adulthood without being diagnosed, largely because they’re able to mask, to fit in socially, is it not much more likely that this is what’s happening? Not that the parents playing in a certain way are magically making their child no longer autistic? ⠀ As many autistic adults and families will testify, helping a child to be better at masking and fitting in before getting a late diagnosis and missing out on years of vital support, is not something we should be encouraging. ⠀ What we really need is a better diagnosis system so that families are able to get the support they need, as early as possible, not to teach them how to make their child avoid getting a diagnosis. ⠀ Of course the right therapies can help an autistic person reduce some of their challenges, improve their communication skills and cope better with the world around them. What they can’t do is prevent them from being autistic. ⠀ So please ignore articles like this, the last thing we need is the wider world thinking a diagnosis can be prevented if parents act differently.
