Unlike many fellow defectors who lived in poverty and had nothing to lose, she came from a wealthy family and enjoyed all the benefits of being part of a good “songbun”-the North Korean social elite. But her background does not make her journey any less daunting. She spent 11 year in China, switching between different aliases to escape deportation (hence the title), narrowly escaped being sold into prostitution, and learned to speak fluent Chinese in order to survive. After successfully reaching South Korea and starting life afresh in Seoul, she made the bold decision to help her family escape as well. On the way to freedom, they faced the challenges of trying to cross the Chinese border, a lengthy incarceration in a Laotian prison, as well as plenty of guilt and loss. This autobiography reads like a novel. I read it in one sitting, and though I’ve devoured numerous books on North Korea, the stories of defectors always have me on the edge of my seat.
