Posted @withregram • @bbcnews The largest protests "in the history of independent Belarus" took place this weekend. Tens of thousands gathered in the capital Minsk to express their anger and frustration at the disputed re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko, and decry police brutality.

The demonstration was fuelled by a week of violent clashes, which saw 6,700 people arrested and widespread allegations of torture by authorities. Russian leader Vladimir Putin has offered military support, as Lukashenko fights to maintain his 26-year grip on power.

On Monday the autocratic leader was heckled at a prearranged photo-op with factory workers, while state TV employees left studios empty to protest against censorship in the country. Opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, currently in hiding in Lithuania, has offered to takeover as interim leader. (📸 Getty Images).

🔥 China Passes Hong Kong Security Law Aimed at Crushing Protests
中國通過香港國安法 旨在壓制群眾抗議

⏰ Senior members of the National People’s Congress voted unanimously Tuesday to pass the legislation, which is meant to prevent and punish subversive, secessionist and terrorist activities in Hong Kong and collusion with foreign forces, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. The law will take effect from the day that it is published, the agency said.
根據新華社報導，中國人大常委會於週二一致通過《中華人民共和國香港特別行政區維護國家安全法》，此法案旨在防範和懲治與香港特別行政區有關的分裂國家、顛覆國家政權、組織實施恐怖活動和勾結外國或者境外勢力危害國家安全等犯罪，法案將於頒佈當日即時生效。

🚨 Since Beijing first announced plans for enacting national-security legislation for Hong Kong in late May, Chinese officials have repeatedly rebuffed criticism from opposition politicians and rights activists in the city, as well as from the U.S. and other Western powers, who have decried the law as a tool for suppressing civil liberties in the Asian financial center and undercutting its promised autonomy from Beijing.
自五月下旬北京當權首次宣布制定港版國安法的計畫以來，中國官員一再駁斥來自香港政界反對派、民權運動人士以及美國等西方國家的批評，這些批評譴責這部法律將會打壓香港公民自由並削弱中國承諾的香港自治。

It said central-government agencies would work with counterparts in the city to implement the legislation and “generate the necessary deterrent force” against threats to national security.
