2020-04-29 12:41:33Cannabis is legal for recreational use in eleven U.S. states and allowed for medical use in another 33. After decades of criminalization, what does the blooming cannabis industry mean for sustainability?
Nature N8 sits down with Dr. Jeff Chen, a doctor and entrepreneur who specializes in cannabis research and commercialization. We’ve heard that hemp can strengthen concrete, be used in automotive manufacturing, or even make super batteries—but are these just pipes dreams?
Dr. Jeff Chen was the founding director of the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative. Today, he helps separate fact from fiction and gives a framework to understand the potential environmental impact of fully legalized cannabis.

In 2020, the horrific trend of violence against Indigenous peoples around the world continued, with over one-third of all fatal attacks against #EnvironmentDefenders targeting Indigenous peoples, as detailed in this week’s Global Witness report.

I want to congratulate @newbreathfoundation on the launch of their #WeGotUs fund to help the Bay Area.
The #WeGotUs Fund will address racialized violence against the AAPI community by promoting cross-racial solidarity, long-term sustainable power, and effective alternatives to criminalization.

We’re launching the $10 million fund to support AAPI communities to build power, racial solidarity, and healing amongst AAPI, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color communities.
“We must be fearless in building a pathway towards collective liberation by investing in organizations that are often invisible and under-resourced. It is time to lift up and empower our AAPI communities who have, for too long, been overlooked because of the model minority myth.” - Eddy Zheng, President & Founder of the New Breath Foundation

And @eastbaycf to identify and support several community groups who have been working hard to strengthen ties within our community. The $25k that was originally offered as a reward to catch the person who shoved the 91 year old to the ground in Oakland Chinatown was put into this fund.

Happy New Breath, everyone! I’m excited to announce that this week, New Breath Foundation is distributing $130,000 in grants to twelve community-based organizations to decrease violence against the Asian American community, promote cross-racial solidarity, and advance effective alternatives to criminalization.
I’m very thankful to everyone who has invested in this initial round to support the incredible work everyone is doing across the country. We also appreciate the individuals who utilize their public platforms to raise awareness and contribute. We especially want to thank actor Daniel Wu (@thatdanielwu) for being one of the first supporters to kickstart this fund.
These grants are part of a new collaboration with the East Bay Community Foundation (@eastbaycf) and other philanthropic partners.
NBF grew out of the grassroots movements to end mass incarceration, address immigration/deportation issues, and advance racial justice and solidarity. We hope to build long-term infrastructure to advance movements for equity and justice.
This is just the beginning. I look forward to sharing more soon.
