2021-02-06 03:30:03Man Mo Temple, located within a 15-minute walk from the main market, is not only the oldest temple in Mui Wo where generations have prayed to Chinese deities since the Ming Dynasty in the 16th century, but it is also where disputes over silver mining were resolved. Situated at the midway point between Pak Ngan Heung, which translates as “white silver village,” and the Silvermine Cave, it served as a court where villagers came for conciliation before going to work or home.
Originally a lead ore mine, the silver extracted among the minerals inside the Silvermine Cave had attracted flocks of miners. Walking along the waterfalls from Man Mo Temple, one reaches the lower cave of the mine where the mining activities took place. In 1886, Tien Wah Mining Company established by Chinese developer Ho A-mei started large-scale mining operations in the area, which were later passed to other entrepreneurs including Tong King-sing and Xu Run. The mining finally came to a halt in 1896 due to the poor quality of the silver minerals.
