𝗜𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗗-𝟭𝟵 Many people have asked me to comment about Ivermectin. Here’s my summary about the drug. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘐𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯? It is an anti-parasitic agent and it is used to treat neglected tropical diseases/parasites including scabies and parasitic worms. It’s normally used to treat parasitic infection in animals. 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵? Ivermectin has been in the news a lot recently. It started when a study published by Elgazzar et al (Egypt) in November 2020 shows that the drug greatly reduces COVID deaths. However, the study was retracted in July 2021 due to fraud, plagiarism and data manipulation (Reardon 2021). Before it was retracted, the paper was viewed more than 150K times and cited more than 30 times as well as lots of media attention! 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦? Cochrane meta-analysis (which is the highest level of evidence in evidence-based medicine) assessed 14 studies with 1678 participants investigating ivermectin compared to no treatment, placebo (dummy treatment), or standard of care. The completed studies are small and few are considered high quality. Overall, the reliable evidence available DOES NOT support the use of ivermectin for treatment or prevention of COVID‐19 outside of well‐designed randomised trials (Popp et al 2021). 𝘊𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘐𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯? At the moment, Ivermectin can only be used in clinical trials with appropriate monitoring and regulation. There are currently 31 ongoing studies investigating Ivermectin. Unregulated use and overdose of Ivermectin (buying it off the internet or using it at home without doctor’s prescription) can lead to: 👉🏽nausea & vomiting, diarrhoea 👉🏽ataxia (problems with balance) 👉🏽hypotension (low blood pressure) 👉🏽seizure 👉🏽coma 👉🏽death So, please don’t use unapproved medication as it is dangerous. I know that everyone is desperate for a magic pill but please always question your sources. As of now, Ivermectin is NOT a treatment option for COVID-19.
