Gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy) is normally done by key hole surgery (laparoscopic) 🏥 📌Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a complete removal of gallbladder using 4 small cuts. Your surgeon will discuss the risks and benefits of the surgery prior to the operation. Please see the video above to get a sneak peek on how it is done (go to my TikTok to watch the full video). It normally takes 30-90 min depends on the complexity of the surgery. 📌You can normally go home on the same day of your surgery 📌Typically, it takes about 2 weeks for you to go back to your normal activities 📌If it’s an open surgery, you may take longer to recover (up to 6-8 weeks). You normally have to stay in the hospital for a few days. 📌You may lead a normal life without your gallbladder. Your liver will still produce bile to digest fat, but instead of it being stored in your gallbladder, it goes straight into your digestive system 📌You can return to your normal diet as soon after the operation. Most people find they prefer to eat light food and small meals a few days after the operation. 📌You should aim for a healthy balanced diet with regular low-fat meals 📌 Some people may experience bloating or diarrhoea after surgery but this will go away after a few weeks. 📌If you have any concerns, please discuss with your surgeon. Have you ever experienced them? . ⚡️Sudden and rapidly intensifying pain in the upper right portion of your abdomen and just below your breastbone ⚡️Back pain between your shoulder blades ⚡️Pain in your right shoulder ⚡️Nausea or vomiting . Most gallbladder symptoms flare up after FATTY or SPICY meals and include intense abdominal pain described as burning and sharp. . A group of sixth form students from @stpaulsschoollondon St Paul’s Boys School, London visited @imperialcollege yesterday for a Surgical Taster Day. My colleagues and I talked about our education experience and career in surgery. I taught them how to do laparoscopic cholecystectomy (keyhole surgery to remove gallbladder) using our virtual reality laparoscopic simulation and anatomy using Anatomage table in our Virtual Reality Lab.
