【不再讓大量動物為人類的生技發展無辜犧牲】

國立成功大學醫學院 環境醫學研究所特聘教授 #王應然 從事環境毒理學研究，從研究生時代開始，每年農曆7月中旬，醫學研究中心都會舉辦 #動物慰靈公祭，邀請犧牲實驗動物的研究人員前往祭拜，一方面感謝動物們的奉獻，另一方面也讓研究人員心中殺生的不安獲得寬解。

如今，王應然每年仍需率領研究生及助理在供桌前雙手合十、舉香致意。他不禁自問：「還要多久，我們才能改變 #大量犧牲實驗動物的科學研究？」

動物替代的概念，首先在1957年由W.M.S. Russell和R.L. Burch提出，後來被稱作「3Rs」：減量（reduction）、精緻化（refinement）、取代（replacement）。經過60多年的努力和推廣，已經逐漸成為世界趨勢。

因為業務所需，大約三年前，他開始深入研究動物實驗替代方案的國際現況與展望，深切期望台灣成立 #動物實驗替代3Rs中心，以支援替代測試的跨部會需求。中心須有足夠的專業知識及技術，可以做到以下這些事⋯⋯

To excel in the ever-changing society, traditional education is inadequate - the skills needed have moved beyond competence in the 3Rs (Reading, wRiting, and aRithmatic) towards broader skills in the 4Cs (Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking).

Academic studies in Hong Kong tend to be homogenous as subjects like Chemistry, Biology, and Economics dominate.
