    This term, I’m working on an art project of mine for GCSE Art & Design. Our keyword for the project is ‘Reflections’, and we started off during the summer holidays by taking a series of photographs based on the theme (some of which I will be sharing with you soon!), and for the past couple of weeks, we’ve been thoroughly delving into the topic and exploring lots of different parts of the project.

    For this term, the end result that we’re planning for with this project is an engraving or etching based on our which is essentially a piece of art scratched into something like a metal plate or a woodblock. Ink is rolled onto the piece, then it’s pressed down onto a piece of paper to reveal the finished print.

    For now, though, we’re just at the planning and research stage, which starts off with the holy grail of art projects…a mind map ✨ I was busy for hours on end editing, printing out, glueing in and annotating my photographs with my various ideas, thoughts, musings and anything else that might contribute to the project. I even took the liberty of adding some little doodles around the page to make it pop. The aim was really just to make a bustling, buzzing page full of information to make a strong first impression for our portfolio - and to be honest? I think I’ve done quite well on that respect; I’m very proud of the work I’ve put into it!

    I was pleased to hear the positive feedback from my art teacher as well; according to her, my use of space, arrangement and bursts of colour made the mind map a great opening piece for the portfolio. Plus, I’m really glad to see that she loved all of my photos! A great start to the project, don’t ya think?

    Nghề khắc gỗ thủ công được cho là đã phát triển ở Việt Nam từ khoảng thế kỷ XXI tới đầu thế kỷ XXII. Cùng với sự nở rộ của kỹ thuật khắc gỗ là sự xuất hiện của tranh in dân gian xuất hiện ở nhiều vùng miền khác nhau như tranh Đông Hồ ở Bắc Ninh, tranh Hàng Trống ở Hà Nội, tranh làng Sình ở Huế và tranh Kim Hoàng ở Hà Tây. Mỗi làng nghề lại có một phong cách rất riêng, chẳng hạn tranh Đông Hồ nổi tiếng với độ bền và độ tươi của màu sắc. Những chủ đề thường xuất hiện là con vật, đời sống sinh hoạt và tâm linh, các lễ nghi tôn giáo hoặc truyền thuyết dân gian.

    Lấy cảm hứng từ một trong những bức tranh Đông Hồ nổi tiếng, hình ảnh cậu bé ôm con gà được tái hiện lên bộ váy này, tượng trưng cho ước muốn hiển đạt. Thiết kế này được diễn viên Angela Phương Trinh mặc khi tham dự buổi công chiếu phim ‘Julieta’ tại thảm đỏ Liên hoan Cannes 2016.

    Woodblock craft is believed to have evolved in Vietnam during the 11th or early 12th century. As printing techniques developed, the production of folk paintings developed in many localities, and folk paintings were often named after their place of production, for example Đông Hồ in Bắc Ninh province; Hàng Trống in Hanoi, Sình Village in Huế; and Kim Hoàng painting in Hà Tây Province. Each village has its own unique style, Đông Hồ for example is known for the durability and vibrancy of their colours. Common themes that are found consistently include animals, every day and spiritual life, local worship and folk tales.

    Inspired by one of the most famous Đông Hồ traditional woodcut prints, this dress features a child holding a chicken representing eminence or glory, and is pictured here as worn by actor, Angela Phương Trinh, on the red carpet at the premier of 'Julieta' at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
