ヴィッツ（初代）の車台に、15インチのホイールと5ドアハッチバックボディを被せたコンパクトカーである。2001年の東京モーターショーで出展され、そのコンセプトカー然としたスタイルをそのままに、翌2002年に市販された。

当初は日本国内専用車であったが、のちに北米でも若者向けのクールブランド「サイオンで、初代がxAとして、2代目がxDとして販売されている。
2002年5月、初代発売。当時はトヨペット店とネッツ店での併売であった。

ヴィッツに比して若干ボディサイズを大きくすることで、居住性の向上に貢献するだけでなく、シャープなボディラインにSUV風のオーバーフェンダーによって、クールでスタイリッシュなデザインを施すことでヴィッツとの差別化を図っている。また、ヴィッツと同様にセンターメーターを採用している。

開発にあたっては試作車を製作しない、いわゆる「フルデジタル設計」で製作されている[1]。すなわち、実車での走行試験を行っておらず、コストダウン・開発スピードの速さに繋がっている。

エンジンは、2NZ-FE型1300cc(87ps)と1NZ-FE型1500cc(109ps)の2種類で、トランスミッションは、全車4速ATを採用する（北米向けにはMT仕様も存在する）。2NZ-FE型1300ccは平成17年排出ガス基準75%低減レベルを、1NZ-FE型1500ccは平成17年排出ガス基準50%低減レベルを達成。

2005年5月、初のマイナーチェンジを行うとともにネッツ店専売車種となり、フロントエンブレムは2代目ヴィッツよりネッツ店の専売車種に採用が始まった"N"をかたどった物へと変更された。この際、ノーマルグレードとスポーティグレードの差別化を図った。

The founder is put on the market in May, 2002. It is U in the Toyopet shop and the Nets shop and at that time.

The differentiation with Witz is attempted by it not only contributes to the improvement of the livability by enlarging some sizes of the body compared with Witz but also giving a stylish design to ..Sharp.. bodyline coolly with an over fender of the SUV style. Moreover, a central meter is adopted as well as Witz.

When developing, one produced with so-called "Full, digital design" with which the concept model is not produced. That is, test run in a real car is not done, and it connects with the speed of reduction in costs and the development speed.
