香港警隊屢稱依法辦事，但公然違規濫權，包括無視法庭搜查令限制，肆無忌憚翻閱新聞採訪材料、限制編採人員活動和履行採訪職務，阻撓新聞機構正常運作。面對此等不合法、不合理的橫蠻行徑，《蘋果日報》仝人定必以無畏無懼的態度，繼續在打壓中，以真相說亮話。

港版《國安法》聲言香港居民享有言論、新聞、出版自由，警隊種種行徑，已向香港及國際社會作了一次反面示範。搜查新聞機構嚴重衝擊新聞自由，為文明社會所不容，政權以為滋擾及威嚇便能令我們噤聲，欲將一個國際城市逼退至第三世界、極權社會水平。香港新聞自由岌岌可危，現時更被推至懸崖邊緣，面對危急關頭，《蘋果日報》仝人必定緊守崗位，捍衞新聞自由。

Following the arrests of Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Digital, and executives of the media group under the national security law on Monday, several hundreds of police officers conducted a raid at the Apple Daily headquarters. Officers were seen rifling through documents in the newsroom, breaching press freedom through intimidation and creating an atmosphere of white terror. Apple Daily is furious and hereby strongly condemns the operation.

The Hong Kong Police Force have blatantly bypassed the law and abused their power, despite claims about acting according to the rules. They have, for instance, ignored the limitation of the search warrant and rifled through news materials, as well as restricting press members from reporting and obstructing a news organization from operating. In the face of these illegal, unreasonable and barbaric tactics, the staff of Apple Daily will stay fearless and continue speaking the truth amid persecution.

Beijing’s national security law for Hong Kong claims to guarantee residents’ freedom of speech, of the press and of publication, but the authorities’ actions have proved otherwise. Raiding a news institution is a severe attack on press freedom and should not be tolerated in a civilized society. The regime believes that we will be silenced by intimidation and harassment, and that they can take an international city down the path of autocracy. Hong Kong’s press freedom is now hanging by a thread, but our staff will remain fully committed to our duty to defend the freedom of the press.

As Publisher of Apple Daily Cheung Kim Hung says: Apple Daily shall fight on.

‼️只可扣留48小時‼️唔係72小時‼️
#要清楚知道自己嘅權益

網上有傳警察拉人之後，由原本可扣留48小時改為72小時，見到我上一個post仍有唔少留言以為係真，所以出呢個post講清楚，因為每個人必須清楚知道自己嘅權益，保障自己好重要。

1. 警隊網頁見到「被捕人士指引— 拘捕及羈留」所指嘅72小時，只係講緊根據遞解出境法律而被拘捕或扣留嘅人，例如非法入境者。

2. 《警隊條例》第232章白紙黑字好清楚：（中文譯得好難明，所以引英文）”where such person is detained in custody he shall be brought before a magistrate as soon as practicable, unless within 48 hours of his apprehension a warrant for his arrest and detention under any law relating to deportation is applied for, in which case he may be detained for a period not exceeding 72 hours from the time of such apprehension.

3. 好難怪大家誤會，我聽到連一啲大狀都話寫得misleading。即係話，警隊網頁嘅「指引」（唔知點解）隻字不提《警隊條例》列明嘅48小時，只係選擇話你知有72小時呢件事。一般人就咁睇，好容易誤會扣留已由本來48小時改為72小時，其實72小時只限根據遞解出境法律而被拘捕嘅人。

4. 如果被拉，唔好被嚇倒或誤導，誤以為可以扣留72小時呀。

【明報專訊】繼金庸同羅貫中後，蕭叔叔最愛的小說作家就是維多利亞時期的英國人Charles Dickens，中文一般譯為狄更斯。狄更斯最出名的，是他風趣幽默的文筆。別看他的Great Expectations成本字典咁厚，字句咁長就以為好悶，蕭叔叔讀佢時，成日都笑到收唔到聲。可是本文主旨不是Dickens的英式幽默，今天找來的一段文字，背了會有三大功效（哎，蕭叔叔愈來愈像個cheap cheap salesman）：

一、學懂何謂工整的英文。

二、吸收英文的文氣、節奏。

三、學會巧妙運用動詞。

試問又怎能不背？看文章前，當然要了解背景。文章取自Dickens名作Great Expectations，故事講主角窮小孩Pip無意中救了逃犯Magwitch，後來又唔知點解有人畀筆錢佢去倫敦學做紳士。下面一段，是chapter 1裏小Pip碰見逃犯的情景。這段文字，一定要大聲朗讀，否則無意思。要聽蕭叔叔不太完美的聲演，當然要看短片（english.mingpao.com/siu.htm）。

A fearful man, all in coarse grey, with a great iron on his leg. A man with no hat, and with broken shoes, and with an old rag tied round his head. A man who had been soaked in water, and smothered in mud, and lamed by stones, and cut by flints, and stung by nettles, and torn by briars; who limped, and shivered, and glared, and growled; and whose teeth chattered in his head as he seized me by the chin.

如果你覺得深字多，唔緊要，唔使怕，因為每個字都要查。蕭叔叔學英文，分精讀（是用盡所有精力去讀，唔係補習社精讀班的精讀）同hea讀。Hea讀唔使點查字典，get個大意即可。精讀嘛，當然要每個字都查，否則浪費了大好文字，對不住好作家。

蕭叔叔最想大家看的是這句：

A man who'd been

soaked in water,

and smothered in mud,

and lamed by stones,

and cut by flints,

and stung by nettles,

and torn by briars;

此所謂工整。每個item都是一個被動動詞加preposition加名詞，而且每個item都是兩個重音，讀起來節奏鏗鏘，頗像詩詞。中文當然也有類似修辭手法，好像三國演義中曹軍謀臣孔融同荀彧在曹操面前，辯論袁紹是否可怕的敵人，荀彧說：「紹兵多而不整。田豐剛而犯上，許攸貪而不智，審配專而無謀，逢紀果而無用：此數人者，勢不相容，必生內變，顏良、文醜，匹夫之勇，一戰可擒。其餘碌碌等輩，縱有百萬，何足道哉！」其中一系列排比句：

田豐剛而犯上，

許攸貪而不智，

審配專而無謀，

逢紀果而無用。

兩字的人名，然後一個單字形容詞，配上「而」，再來一個意思相對的形容詞。效果同樣是工整非常，讀起來甚有氣勢。

你可能會說：下下咁寫，會唔會好作狀？這是蕭叔叔給所有writing學生的warning：學任何東西，都要留意場合是否適合，context是否需要某些寫法。排比句，當然不能句句用，否則聽起來像sing song，一點本來intended的效用都沒有。要多想whether the background and circumstances of your writing warrant the use of the pounding rhythm and perfect symmetry of the parallel structure.

也講講句子後半部：who limped, and shivered, and glared and growled，都是簡短的一至兩個音節的動詞。留意整段文字的動詞，都很能draw pictures：soaked、smothered、lamed、cut、stung、torn、limped、shivered、glared、growled，全部都非常生動，同學不妨學習這種寫法，善用多變的動詞，文章會生色不少。
