There's not just one road to the destination, but many roads. You just need to take the little step that’s right in front of you, and then the next one, and a few years down the track, they will seem like massive achievements.

I didn’t meet my father until I was 6 years old. My parents had a comfortable, middle-class life in Shanghai, or as close as you could get under communism. But they always wanted to live overseas, and just before I was born, my dad came to Sydney to set things up. I don’t know why, but in the end, my mother and I didn’t join him until I was 6.

I ended up having to move school 3 times before I came to Balwyn Primary School, which was relatively multicultural.

After that, I did alright. Music featured very prominently in my life. I had started learning the violin from the age of 2.5 years old and even with all the troubles that were going on in my life, had somehow still kept up with it. 日本人に馴染みのない？「So bad」の使い方

これまで英語を学ぶ多くの日本人と接してきた経験のなかで、ネイティブは多用してるものの、あまり馴染みがないせか日本人の口からはあまり聞いたことがないのが、本日ご紹介する2パターンの“So bad”の使い方です。とても簡単なので是非マスターしておきましょう！

1) I want to _____ so bad
→「〜したくて仕方ない（たまらない/しょうがない）」
--------------------------------------------------
　
ある物があまりにも欲しくて我慢できない時、ある情報や秘密が知りたくて仕方ない時などに日本語では「〜したくて仕方ない」と表現しますが、それと同じような意味を成す英語がso badです。「I really want to _____」の代わりに使える日常的な表現です。例えば、海外赴任している日本人がしばらく日本食を食べれない生活を送っていて、「お米が食べたくて仕方がない」と言いたい場合は「I want to eat rice so bad!」となります。
　
✔会話ではSo badが一般的に使われますが、文法上はso badlyが正しい。
　
✔口語的な表現なので、フォーマルな場や文章を書く時は使うのを避けましょう。
　
＜例文＞
　
I want to know so bad! Tell me!
（知りたくてたまりません。教えてよ！）
　
I want to drink a beer so bad.
（ビールが飲みたくて仕方ありません。）
　
I want the new iPhone 6S so bad.
（新しいiPhone6Sが欲しくてたまらんわ〜。）

何かがあまりにも酷いことを強調し、それによって生じる事態・状況を説明するときの表現です。例えば、「彼の字はあまりにも汚くて読めない」は「His handwriting is so bad that I can't read it」、「サービスがあまりにも悪くてチップを払いませんでした」は「The service was so bad that we didn't pay tip.」となります。
　
✔so badの後のthatは任意。
　
✔副詞として使う場合はBadlyを使う。
　
＜例文＞

That movie was so bad that it was actually funny.
（あの映画、あまりにも酷くて逆におもろかったわ。）
　
The food was so bad that I couldn't eat it.
（その食べ物は、あまりにも不味くて食べれませんでした。）
　
The weather was so bad we had to cancel the event.

「Anyway」?「Anyways」?「By the way」? 場面に応じた正しい使い分け

「Anyway」「Anyways」と「By the way」は全て話題を変える時に使われるフレーズですが、状況によって使い分けする必要があります。使い方によってはネイティブの人をイラっとさせることにもなり兼ねないので、3つそれぞれの正しい使い方を習得しましょう。

1) Anyway
→「とにかく」

Anywayは基本「話題を変える」時に使われます。今、話している話題を終らせ、新しいトピックを紹介する時にAnywayが用いられます。例えば、同僚と仕事の話しをしていて急に「今夜どこに食べに行きましょうか？」話題をガラッと変える場合は「Anyway, where do you want to go eat tonight?」になります。但し、Anywayは話題の転換だけに限らず以下のような状況でも使われます。
　
✔会話の内容をまとめる
　
✔脱線した話しを戻す
　
✔結果や要点を伝える
　
✔会話を終わらし帰りの合図を示す

→「とにかく」

AnywaysとAnywayの意味・ニュアンス、使い方は全く同じですがAnywaysは会話で使われる「インフォーマル」な言い方になります。文法上、正しい表現はAnywayですが多くのネイティブは会話でAnywaysと表し、スラングとして使われるようになりました。友達同士でanywaysと使うのは問題ありませんが、フォーマルな状況や文章を書くときは必ずanywayを使いましょう。また、Anywaysを使う人にイライラするアメリカ人も少なくなく、マイナスな印象を与える事もありますので注意しましょう。

（とにかく後でメールします）
　
Anyways, how is your family doing?
（家族は元気ですか？）

By the wayも話題を変える時に使いますが、急に何かを思い出して話題を変える時に「そう言えば〜」というニュアンスで使われます。なので、何かを思い出しOh by the wayのようにOhを加えて表すことがよくあります。By the wayはその他にも会話の内容に情報を加える時にも使われます。

Being locked at home, Des and I have started to record a new series on my Youtube channel intitulated “Comme à la maison 麥客氣啦 “
”Comme à la maison” means feel at home, we use this term in France when we invite friends over and want them to feel just as comfortable as they do at home.
So through this new show, we invite you in our home, our kitchen to share our favorite dishes, try new ones and share our love for cooking.
