As they have been living off dwindling savings, food aid from charities organizations and kindly neighbors who occasionally offer provisions. The family's favorite foods — fried chicken, eggs, fruit and bread — are now out of their budget. They eat mainly beans. They can afford a small amount of chicken but give most of it to their daughter. In this special report and photo series on food insecurity for @NPR, Ali invited me to his kitchen as he prepares a dish his mother taught him: a mix of rice, lentils, curry, chopped long beans and chili powder. "Let my wife rest today. I will cook and show you!" he says. What's most important to him, he says, is taking care of his pregnant wife (currently in 2nd trimester) and 6-year-old daughter. Ok, so for all y’all that don’t live in Taiwan, please allow me to attempt to explain what a Taiwanese convenience store is. There are an estimated 10,000 convenience stores on this tiny island. You may think you know what a convenience store is by definition, but Taiwanese stores take “convenience” to a whole new level. So, what exactly is a Taiwanese convenience store you may ask? Well, I would say it is a wonderous place where dreams can become reality and nothing is impossible. Beyond the hundreds of standard food items that include, packaged snacks, frozen foods, fresh produce, heat & serve meals, ambient/hot/cold/frozen beverages, spirits & liquors, baked goods, ready to eat meals, etc. that are all delivered daily, they also carry a wide assortment of commonly used household goods. Also most stores have a section for dining-in. So far everything should sound pretty familiar. This is when it starts getting interesting. Convenience stores here also serve as your local post office where you can send and receive mail/packages. In addition to that, they offer a host of e-transaction services that allow you to pay for things like your taxes, utilities, insurance, charitable donations, airfare, credit cards, tolls, traffic/parking tickets, loans, cable tv, and much more. You can also purchase concert tickets and train tickets directly in store; use public restrooms, make photocopies, send faxes, ATM, print colored documents, develop photos and even buy bitcoin directly through a portal machine in the store while having a draft beer from the tap (not kidding). Pretty much everything can also be done cashless using an Easy Card. Don’t believe me?
