Speak English on campus or face “unintended consequences.”
"A professor stepped down from her position as director of graduate studies in the biostatistics department after an email she sent discouraging Chinese students from speaking in their native tongue went viral."
In all honesty, the director was most likely well-intentioned, doing what she thought was best to help students. However, there are better ways to address the issue. This is a learning opportunity for us all.

“To international students, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep these unintended consequences in mind when you choose to speak in Chinese in the building. I have no idea how hard it has been and still is for you to come to the US and have to learn in a non-native language. As such, I have the upmost [sic] respect for what you are doing. That being said, I encourage you to commit to using English 100% of the time when you are in Hock or any other professional setting.”

Hotel Métropole Geneva
Distinguished guests, all the good friends of Taiwan throughout the world,
It’s my upmost honor to be here to join the banquet with you. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincerest gratitude to our good friends, for your strong and long-term support of Taiwan.
The 70th World Health Assembly will begin tomorrow, representatives and governmental officials from around the world gather here to discuss important topics on global health. Meanwhile, 23 million people in Taiwan are denied participation due to political reasons irrelevant to healthcare.
Denying participation of Taiwan is against the spirit of the WHO Constitution. On behalf of sixteen major associations of healthcare professionals in Taiwan, we strongly express our disappointment in the decision by WHO on this matter.
WHA needs Taiwan and Taiwan needs WHA. Taiwan is a leader and a major contributor to the global community in healthcare and medicine. It was our privilege that the WMA general assembly was held in Taiwan last year, during which the Declaration of Taipei, one of the most significant statements on respecting personal privacy in the era of big data and precision medicine, was officially adopted.
We believe that humanitarian activities should be above politics. Access to the same high quality of healthcare is an inalienable right to the 23 million people in Taiwan.
Please continue your warm support to Taiwan. Let Taiwan join the WHO. Thank you!
