I came across this Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) syndrome (also known as Wilkie’s syndrome) while I was studying Pancreas.
DEFINITION & DIAGNOSIS:
SMA syndrome is defined as the reduced angle between Aorta and SMA (see from pictures, the lateral view of the vasculature) and reduced distance between the two vessels causing compression of the third part of the duodenum (D3). SMA usually forms an angle of 45° with the aorta, normal range of angle is from 25° to 60°, when the person is within normal Body Mass Index (BMI). Any condition resulting in loss of mesenteric fat pad leading to reduction of this aorto-mesenteric angle (
