transition 和 conjunction是不一樣的東西。and but or so for nor....等字是對等連接詞 conjunction、because 則是附屬連接詞、however, therefore, hence 才是轉折語！

讀看看以下三個句子，你看的出來哪裡不對嗎？
1. I didn’t study, I got an A on the test.
2. Because I didn’t have breakfast this morning, so I’m hungry.
3. I don’t have money, but I didn’t buy the new dress.
英文作文的常見錯誤之一
⚠️連結詞亂亂用
上面這三個句子都是關於連結詞使用的錯誤
底下我們分別來看到底三個句子錯在哪裡吧
1. I didn’t study, I got an A on the test.
這個句子是由兩個完整的句子組成。兩個完整個句子，是不能使用逗點隔開的，你可以使用句點，或是加上連接詞把他們合起來。
I didn’t study. I got an A on the test.
以這個句子來看，用句點會覺得這兩個句子的關係很奇怪，畢竟沒讀書，照理來說不會考A才對，所以這句比較好的改法是用連接詞來講清楚兩句話的關係。
✅I didn’t study, but I got an A on the test.
加上but之後，兩句關係就很清楚了
或是也可以改成
✅Although I didn’t study, I got an A on the test.
✅I didn’t study; however, I got an A on the test.
注意however的標點使用，這也是很常寫錯的部分。
2. Because I didn’t have breakfast this morning, so I’m hungry.
這個句子錯在同時用了because以及so，因為以及所以在中文裡，是會一起連用沒有錯，可是英文是不行的哦！英文只要有一個，意思就是因為+所以了。
✅Because I didn’t have breakfast this morning, I’m hungry.
可以拿掉so留下because
✅I didn’t have breakfast this morning, so I’m hungry.
或是拿掉because留下so
要使用哪一種，可以看前後文，怎麼接文章邏輯是比較順的，就怎麼去改。
除了because跟so不能連用之外，although跟but也是哦！
我這裡雖然是寫because/so還有although/but，但是只要意思是因為所以、雖然但是的，都不行哦！像是Due to跟so也是不能放一起的
3. I don’t have money, but I didn’t buy the new dress.
第三個錯誤是連接詞的意思錯誤，這個相較於前面兩個，稍微比較少見一點點。
「我沒有錢，但是我沒有買新洋裝。」
蛤？什麼？
你如果讀完這句中文有這個感覺，那就不用太擔心了，你應該是不會犯這個錯，不過如果你中文讀完，沒有覺得奇怪，那… 你可能要先加強中文😂
上面的中文如果改成
「我沒有錢，所以我沒有買新洋裝。」
有沒有覺得這樣才對呢
所以英文也一樣要把but換掉
✅I don’t have money, so I didn’t buy the new dress.
或是也可寫成
✅I don’t have money; therefore, I didn’t buy the new dress.
注意therefore的標點使用，跟上面提到的however是一樣的哦

你知道叫某人 a ginger 是什麼意思嗎？
來看看今天的美國生活用語就會知曉～

You may have noticed that there are some bright-colored vegetables out there. It shouldn’t be surprising, therefore, that some of these vegetables would be used in descriptive idioms.
你或許有注意到，有些蔬菜的顏色特別亮眼，不過這其實沒什麼好意外的，而不免俗地，這些蔬菜當然也出現在美語中。
Carrots, for example. 1⃣ If you were to call someone a carrot-top, what would that mean? It would mean they have red hair! You may be thinking, “But aren’t carrots more orange than red? This is true, but lots of redheads have hair that’s more orange then red, and they’re still called “redheads,” right? There’s even a famous American comedian called Carrot Top (his real name is Scott Thompson). Ex: Our two sons are blond, but our daughter is a carrot-top.
拿 carrot 紅蘿蔔來說，如果你叫某人 carrot-top「紅蘿蔔頭」是什麼意思呢？就是在說他們有頭紅髮！你或許會想：「可是紅蘿蔔是橘色，不是紅色的啊？」是沒錯，但實際上許多紅髮人的髮色與其說是紅色更多是橘色，可他們還是被叫 redhead「紅髮」，是吧？甚至有個知名美國喜劇人就叫 Carrot Top（他的真名是史考特湯普森）。例句：Our two sons are blond, but our daughter is a carrot-top.（我們兩個兒子雖然是金髮，但我們女兒是紅髮。）
2⃣ What if you call someone a “ginger”? It also means they’re a redhead! If you cook with ginger, you may wonder why the word has this meaning. After all, ginger root has more of a yellow or brown color. On the other hand, things like gingerbread men and candied ginger both have a reddish-brown color. But the real answer lies in the ginger plant, which has bright red flowers. Worth mentioning is that some people may consider the term “ginger” offensive, so be careful when using it. Ex: Why are there so many gingers in Ireland?

Finally we have the beet. You probably know that beets are red, but they’re even redder when you cut them open, and the juice is even redder still. 3⃣ So if you say someone is “red as a beet,” it means they’re very red. The phrase is most often used to describe someone who is flushed with embarrassment, but can also describe a person who is red from heat or sunburn. Ex: Tommy turned red as a beet when the girl kissed him.
最後我們來談甜菜。你大概知道甜菜是紅色的，當你把甜菜切開，裡面更紅，而用它們做成的果汁更紅！所以，如果你說某人red as a beet「紅得跟甜菜一樣」，表示他們真的很紅。這個片語常用來形容某人因尷尬而臉紅的樣子，也能形容晒傷後的皮膚。如：Tommy turned red as a beet when the girl kissed him.（女孩親了湯米之後，他的臉紅得像甜菜一樣。）

#英語寫作標點符號 #免費講義
在教TOEFL寫作和學術寫作時，常常發現台灣學生不論程度地都有兩個現象: (1) 標點符號不太會使用 (2) 因標點符號的不會使用，寫作沒有層次。
下面幾個問題，寫作時學生常常會疑惑 (就標點符號使用上) :
[1] yet 和 but 標點使用有不一樣嗎？
[2] for 當因為的時候怎麼用，標點怎麼標？
[3] however 為什麼有時看到前後都是逗號，
以為只能用分號？
下面簡短的比較大家一起看看:
(X) He was hungry, he bought a burrito. (Run-on)
(O) He was hungry. He bought a burrito. (文法對，但句意沒有層次)
(X) He was hungry, therefore, he bought a burrito.
(X) He was hungry and therefore bought a burrito.
(O) He was hungry; therefore, he bought a burrito.
(O) He was hungry; he, therefore, bought a burrito.
(O) He bought a burrito, for he was hungry.
(O) Being hungry, he bought a burrito. (用Modifier, 層次高)
