【為什麼有時美劇用的英文比 CNN / TED Talk 的更難懂？】

「學習英文最好的狀況，不是拿一句話當作單位，而是拿一段對話當作單位，才會有最完整的上下文喔！」

今天想要跟大家談談，在英語母語人士在日常生活中常常使用的「同型多義」片語或慣用法，而這些用法，是讓有些同學覺得美劇有時反而比TED Talk、CNN 這種相對內容可預測、架構清楚的演講、轉播難懂的原因之一。

如果大家能對這樣的用法更加認識、提高意識，必能增進對英文的認識。 今天就以

"I'm right behind you." "It's not you." "Don't go there." "You got me!"

四個美國人天天在用的用法來介紹上下文如何會影響到這些用法的意思。

1️⃣ I'm right behind you. 大家第一個想到應該是「我就在你身後」或是「我會緊跟著」的意思。但我們來看看下面這段話：

A: On this issue...I think I'm right behind you.
B: Thanks man!

這邊的 issue 指的是事情，而這邊的 "I'm right behind you." 意思就變成我贊同你的（觀點、看法)，跟 We see eye to eye. 有點相似 。

2️⃣ It's not you. 從表面意思的「不是你」，衍伸出更高頻的「跟你沒關係、不是因為你」或「這不像你、這不是平常的你」的意思。

英文裡有一句經典的分手台詞就是 It's not you. It's me. (不是因為你，是我的原因)

Hey, you haven't hit the gym for a while! It's not you!
(你好久沒上健身房了～這不像你)

3️⃣ 如果我們只直翻 Don't go there. 意思就是「不要去那裡」。但在日常生活中，更高頻的意思常常是「不要提了、不要想」的意思。

A: We could just lend her the money.
B: Don't even go there – we're not lending her anything.”

4️⃣ "You got me." 這個字的表面意思就不好猜了，更何況衍伸用法。以頻度來說， “You got me.” 的高頻語意常常有「難倒我了」、「被你發現了」的意思。

A: When will she arrive? (她什麼時候會到呢？
B: You got me. I have no idea. (我也不知道誒)

類似「同型多義」的用法還有好多好多。我的同事也曾經跟我講話時用過 "See where I'm coming from?" 跟他從哪裡來一點關係也沒有，意思是「你了解我的意思嗎？你了解我為什麼會這樣說嗎？」

前陣子因為想讓郵寄訂單的信封多點樂趣，
所以刻了一隻郵遞區號臘腸章。

在IG上發表後，我收到一個留言：

My dachshund Kiki is actually from Taiwan! She was shipped over to Canada after being rescued from a puppy mill there.

原來台灣除了出輸台製產品(MIT)外，台製貓狗也這麼有名。
這讓我想起讀過的一篇新聞：【認養困境！　台流浪狗輸出量世界第一】
在這個什麼都想爭第一的比賽制小國家裡，還真的有件事能成為全世界第一。
只是這樣世界第一的羞愧讓我暫時還不知道要怎麼回覆那個留言。

她的狗很可愛，看照片就知到，Kiki現在過的很好，感謝老天。

這件事除了有負面的消息外其實還有另一個值得鼓勵的地方，
謝謝所有把動物拯救並送養到國外的推手們，他們因為這樣的轉變而生活的更好了。

SPCA 6月號的雜誌裡有這樣一句話：
沒錢，沒時間，沒體力
千萬不要養寵物

我想這是提醒有意飼養寵物的人最簡短的一句忠告。
他們不是總是像想像中那樣好照顧的！

1 year ago today, I went on a semester long exchange to study at Korea's Sungkyunkwan University #성균관대학교 for Fall 2020. 🇰🇷It was truly an exchange journey that really changed my life.
