On 10 Aug 2020, Jimmy Lai, owner of pro-democracy newspaper, Apple Daily, and his sons, along with numerous activists and journalists in Hong Kong were arrested for charges including "colluding with foreign forces", an offence under the under the draconian (嚴酷苛刻的) #NationalSecurityLaw. The arrest was followed by an unprecedented (史無前例) raid (搜捕行動) on Apple Daily Headquarters, which marked the death of press freedom (新聞自由) in Hong Kong.
It is apparent that the media is now targeted and penalized for being critical against the government. In the fight against government suppression (鎮壓) undermining (損害) human rights and freedom of speech, Hongkongers showed solidarity (團結) with Apple Daily by purchasing piles of copies, emptying newspaper racks across the city.
