Saliva is important because your digestion starts as soon as your saliva starting to mix with the food you put into your mouth. I was once lucky enough to treat a patient with chemotherapy done after cancer on nasopharynx for more than 5 years, which rendered her little to no salivary production. After treating the patient once, she had noticeable change in salivary production. She has been having treatment once every 2-3 weeks and she is on improving trend on many levels eg fibrotic tissues on neck was considered irreversible yet she gained some neck mobility.
