Welcome to our new series! I often receive messages of what kind and how I prepare asian ingredients for A when he was little. So I thought I’d start putting some of these info together for you all. I’m hoping this will be helpful for you, either its because you want to start giving asian food but don’t know where to start or your little one is just starting solids or you just need some extra inspirations!

Just a quick background of our weaning journey. A started solids at 6mth 1 day. First month we combined traditional weaning (spoon fed) and baby led weaning (BLW). We quickly found that both myself and A preferred BLW because it was easier to prepare and A really liked to self feed. Then I realized there was next to no information on feeding BLW style with Asian food on the internet. So after lots of trial and errors, here we are!
Tofu is a really good addition to a baby’s diet because it’s a good source of protein and contains all nine essentials amino acids. On top of that they aren’t expensive and it’s easy to prepare as you can essentially eat them right out of the package. That’s why I always have a pack of tofu in my fridge for rainy days.
But there are so many different kinds of tofu! The base of tofu is pretty much the same, they’re all soy based, but the water ratio and the method of making it is slightly different which results in different textures. The most common ones you’ll see are probably, Silken, Soft, Medium, Firm and Extra-firm.
In terms of using tofu for BLW, I liked using Soft or Medium-Firm Tofu. For these reasons:
⭐ Easy to handle and doesn’t break apart easily when A’s motor skills were undeveloped
⭐ Has a slightly rougher skin, so it didn’t slip out of A’s hands
⭐ Still moist and tastes good on its own without the need of any sauces
⭐ I used these to make meat patties, silken tofu has too much water and patties will break apart
⭐ Soft enough that I gave it to A when he was 7 months old
⭐ A didn’t gag much when he ate them, extra-firm tofu he gagged
Do you like tofu?
