⭐️It’s Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! AAPI diplomats are a vital part of the State Department, and especially our AIT operation! All month, we look forward to featuring the important contributions of our AAPI colleagues. Today we are sharing Political Section Officer Tom Wong’s story with you.

✨One of my most unforgettable moments during my tour in Taiwan was having the honor of speaking at the Taichung Girls Senior High School, where my mother graduated over 50 years ago. Shortly after graduating, my mom left Taiwan and eventually settled in the United States, where she met my father, who himself had immigrated several years prior. When my brother and I were growing up in New Jersey, she taught us the Chinese phrase "吃得苦中苦,方爲人上人” (loosely translated as "no pain, no gain"). Like countless other immigrants to the United States, my parents endured their fair share of hardships in their lifetime, yet emerged to become productive members of American society. In my own efforts to make my family and country proud, I've never forgotten that phrase my mom taught me. Who would have thought that a generation after my mom left Taiwan, her American born son would go on to serve in the U.S. Army, then join the U.S. diplomatic corps, and have the opportunity to return to visit the very institution that educated her in her youth. -- Political Section Officer Tom Wong

    Avery Ng Man Yuen’s Statement

    Your Honour,

I was brought up by my parents to value the importance of empathy, to care and to feel for others in our community less fortunate. Although I enjoyed great success early in my career, I never had a desire to pursue personal wealth in the more traditional sense.

When I settled back in Hong Kong after years of living abroad, I was baffled and disturbed by how severe the social inequality existed in a city I am proud to call my home. I was struck at how discrimination against the poor and the minorities far too often goes ignored or can even at times is encouraged by the established social structure; and how we cannot have the basic democratic rights and freedoms that other places enjoy.

These were my motivations to join social activism and enter into politics. I chose to spend my energy to speak for the underprivileged, the disenchanted and often ignored segments of society. To offer a voice for those who could not speak for themselves.

Compared to many, I am privileged to have a great education and a certain level of financial freedom and social standing. We are fortunate enough to be able to lead comfortable lives and have the freedom to choose the path that we take. I chose to fight for social equality. Many of those in this court are not that much different. We all love Hong Kong, the place we call home. We chose our different roles in life but with the same aim: to serve others.

Sadly, I fear that many of us are increasingly the exception to the rule. Today far too many Hong Kong people do not have that chance, whether that is our elderly who live in poverty, marginalized youth with few opportunities for social mobility, or workers who give up all their time slaving away to provide the bare minimum for their families. These people all struggle to make ends meet with very limited options in life. “Choice” for them is a luxury that they cannot afford. Let alone having the gratification of being able to dictate their own destiny.

I recognise, with the pressures of life, it is often difficult for people to see beyond their own social bubble. It is harder still to acquire empathy for strangers. Polarized political division increasingly has driven a wedge between people, making it sometimes impossible for people to understand and empathise with one another, to disagree agreeably, and attempt to find some level of compromise.

It has always been my hope that a more democratic system could be the bridge that heals this social divide or at the very least allow us to choose how we can live together in our home.

I’m certain that none of us in this court wanted to see the turmoil in 2019, which has seen our whole society suffer regardless of political preference. Distrust, hatred, and fear has engulfed Hong Kong. Today is certainly not the right forum for this immense topic. However, I hope the court can understand that the Judiciary alone cannot resolve the deep-rooted socio-political divide which exist.

It will take our collective strength, courage, honesty, and empathy to mend our home. Looking at my fellow defendants with their extraordinary history in serving this society, I believe they can do far greater good among us in society than being locked in prison.

In pursuit of the rights of all Hong Kong people, I have broken the law. I am prepared to face the court’s judgement. I am proud to be in the company of my esteemed fellows who have spent their lives championing the rule of law, fighting for the democracy and voicing for the voiceless.

I believe the storm-clouds that currently reside over our home will one day lift, and make way for a bright and clear day. I believe love and empathy will eventually prevail.

    Guan Shin & Co
    Chung Shan Rd, section 1
    225 Alley, Chang Chua, Taiwan
    Đài Loan, R.O.C.

(Lý Bửu Sang)
(Que Chinh)

Chung Phụng Anh shared her first post.

    Aching Endeavor of Family Search
(some of the names have been translated into English by phonic sounds and might not be accurate, and my mom and I don’t know how to use Chinese keystrokes on computers).
My mom was a Chinese (Teochow) living in Cambodia, and a survivor of the Pol pot Khmer Rouge genocide. In the labour camp of the Khmer Rouge, a friendship was born between her and another lady who eventually settled in Taiwan. Now, my mom is living in Boston, MA, United States, and wishes to look for her endearing friend.
My mom’s name translated into Vietnamese is Lý Bửu Sang, her Chinese name is written on top of her teenage passport photo here. She was 15 when she was brought from Nong Phenh to the Khmer Rough labour camp, named something sound like Clok-By-Cam-Pot. There, she and her family made friends with a girl a year or so older than her, named Que Chinh, and her family. My grandpa and Ms. Que Chinh’s father was made to carry heavy loads of human feces for fertilization. He eventually died of inhuman condition in the camp, and Ms. Que Chinh’s father was killed off.
In1979-1980, my mom and Ms. Que Chinh were released and ran to Saigon, Vietnam. They met up regularly in Chợ Lớn (which means literally, Big Market) where gathered a large population of Chinese Vietnamese. The orphaned girls were as close as sisters.
Eventually, Ms. Que Chinh’s brother sponsored her to go to Taiwan. She initially lived with her uncle, who had a small shopping selling treats. They exchanged letters a few times at Mr. Que Chinh’s uncle’s address attached here (not sure if it's in the correct format):
    Guan Shin & Co
    Chung Shan Rd, section 1
    225 Alley, Chang Chua, Taiwan
Ms. Que Chinh sent my mom three letters in which she attached her three photos here with the scenes in Taiwan, one of which was with her younger sister in the hats. The girl who turns around with the background of the mountain skyline is Ms. Que Chinh, and so is the girl with the background of the pagoda.
After that, my mom gave birth to 4 kids and became very busy at first. Then, when she finally had time and wrote to Ms. Que Chinh at the same address, the mail was returned.
To anyone who lives in Taiwan or knows anyone in Taiwan, please kindly help pass the words to Ms. Que Chinh. My mom misses her very much.
Thank you for your kind read...

Japanese house and apartment tour of a new quality way of living in Tokyo for an affordable price.
People think living in Japan, especially Tokyo is very expensive. However, I want to show you through this Japanese house tour of a social apartment in Tokyo that you don't have to pay a lot to live and enjoy your life in Japan.

    The house I went to:
    World Neighbors Kiyosumi-shirakawa
    https://social-apartment.com/builds/view/49

    More social apartments:
    https://social-apartment.com

Thank you to my friends for helping out with this video! ☺️

Social apartments is a new way of living in Japan, it's different to a share house because you actually have your own apartment and the chores/cleaning of the house are taken care of.

I've also lived at places similar to this and I really recommend it for people who are new and moving into Tokyo because it's super hassle free and foreign friendly! Buying furniture, setting up the electricity, internet etc is all done for you too so you can really just enjoy your time and settle in :D
You can also move out to an apartment after you are more settled in to your new life but the apartments here also give you the privacy you want which I really liked!

But biggest thing I like about social apartments is that you can make new friends to help you enjoy and start your life here in Tokyo!
