The word “Narcissist” or Narcissism originated from Greek mythology, where a young man named “Narcissus” fell in love with his image reflected in a pool of water. Narcissism or pathological self-absorption was first identified as a disorder in 1898 by Havelock Ellis and featured in subsequent psychological models, e.g. in Freud's on Narcissism (1914). This disorder was also listed in the classification narcissistic personality disorder in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) since 1968, drawing on the historical concept of “Megalomania” (megalomaniacs are generally more concerned with superiority/obsession with power). The subject of narcissism has intrigued people for centuries, but social scientists now claim that it has become a modern “epidemic”. So what is it, what has led to its increase and is there anything we can do about it? I have spent the last few years researching intensively on this topic — and I have decided to share them gradually on this platform. “The line between self-discovery and self-absorption can blur very easily, and that’s when personal transformation becomes an impediment moreso instead as a mean for improvement.” . I’m not afraid to admit that I was stuck in between that line a few months back. I wanted to love myself, thinking that I should resist everything that goes against my way. However, I've come to realise that not everything is worth fighting for. The world does not revolve around you, likewise not everyone is out there to get you. I was going through a recovery phase after being denied by a bunch of people for fighting for my own rights. Justice was dead to me. These tough and painful moments has shaped me into becoming a highly defensive person. . Consequently, misunderstandings and unhappiness had occurred between some of the closest people to me and I. Nobody is going to understand you the way you wish for them to, you can never control that and there’s no use justifying. They probably aren’t the right people for you in your life anyways. I've realised that I’ve made some grave mistakes along the way. To eschew myself from further succumbing into a vicious cycle of self-absorption and self-lamentation, I’m pushing myself for improvement again, progressing whilst constantly striving to achieve a better version of myself. . So much respect for you because of the way you have remained strong in this industry we both are currently in. Not only that, your continuous growth in improving your skills as well as the creativity you come up with to make your classes fun, SAFE and a kick-ass workout is supremely admirable! • • • The main reason I haven’t actively posted any yoga photos or videos because… I was affected by the ‘cheapening’ on this industry making it easy for anybody to claim to be a yoga teacher. PLEASE I am not being petty, and I am not being envious. Quite honestly, I am proud of the way I express my knowledge in yoga poses and sequences in a Flow class. Once in a while I dabble in the deeper philosophies when I feel it appropriate. Everyone doesn’t HAVE to be a vegetarian or now… wooo VEGAN. To his her own, as long as your actions DO NOT HARM anyone directly and ESPECIALLY INDIRECTLY because of your self-absorption on what you think is right or wrong. • • • Now… I am not a yoga ‘teacher’, I am a yoga instructor, there is a distinct difference. Anyway, I admire those ‘influencers’ with those awe inspiring ‘flying’ and ‘pretzel’ poses however, that is NOT my selling point. I like form, structure and I appreciate proper alignment because I personally have felt an improvement in myself by making these key points important in my own self-practice. I don’t practice the full blown jump-back (or for some amazing ones, ‘float-back’) or jump-through/forward in my Flow practice. I always practice Chaturanga Dandasana (Four-Limbed Staff Pose) and Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward-Facing Dog Pose) with my knees down yet, I can still go into some kick-ass inversions and backbends. Why? Because that is the FIRST-RATE VERSION of me. Doesn’t necessarily mean IF your yoga ‘teacher’ cannot do ‘super-magic-unicorn-power-up-soldier-fire pose’ means he/she isn’t an AMAZING and INSPIRATIONAL yoga instructor. #justsaying • • •
