To Freedom / You and your mother tongue

#Taiwan is something of a melting pot in terms of language. We’ve been working hard to reduce the historical stigma attached to some of these languages and to ensure that they are not lost to future generations. New languages are also being carried to our shores by new arrivals, creating a linguistically dynamic young generation of bilingual or multilingual children and young adults. These young people benefit from the ability to engage in intergenerational communication, important in the preservation of cultural identity and for a more cohesive society.

We recently featured an Indonesian teacher in Taiwan--a new arrival--and one of her students--part of this multilingual younger generation--in “To Freedom,” our promotional short to mark the #UNGA76. They tell the story of Taiwan’s respect for all its languages when they say:

“Here, the natural languages of Taiwan’s inherent ethnic groups are official languages. Regardless of what language you speak at home, you’ll continue to be taught it at school. I don’t need a translator to talk with my grandparents.”

If the UN states part of its mission as encouraging countries around the world to respect the rights of their people, Taiwan's vision of global partnership can serve as a valuable reference.

最近翻照片翻到了2017年，我最愛的鼓手 Antonio Sánchez 帶著他的樂團 Migration 來台灣 河岸留言 演出，想起了之前我曾經翻譯過他的DVD "Master Series"的一段話，非常感動且給我很大的能量，但之前有被盜過帳號都不見了，於是決定再找出來聽打一次重新翻譯分享給大家。

也再次謝謝 河岸留言可以邀請這麼棒的樂團來台灣！！

如果不知道Antonio Sanchez是誰的，他是Pat Metheny band的鼓手，葛萊美獎得了好幾座，同時已經得了奧斯卡等N個獎項的電影 Birdman 「鳥人」，這部整部電影配樂只有鼓聲，所有鼓也都是他錄的。

最後一點我想要說的是，許多關於跟音樂以及音樂家共事的態度。

嗯，當我還在成長時，我總是夢想著可以在很棒、高聳、最大的場館，跟著大型樂團，以及最棒的音樂家們一起演出。 這夢想當然很棒，但你總是要從某些名不經傳的小地方當作你的起點。

突然之間，我意識到我正在小酒吧、小俱樂部、或是某家餐館、某個婚禮場演出 — 而且沒有人在專注聽你演奏，那時我覺得很沮喪而且覺得被冒犯了，舉例來說。我以前做很多婚禮場，而且在上面演奏「熱愛105度C的你」(註一) 上百次，演奏時心裡想「我在這邊銃三小？」、「快讓我離開這吧，殺了我吧，我可以演比這個帥一百倍以上的曲目！」於是，我在演奏時只想打卡下班，就沒有把我的專注放在音樂上面。

又或者某天，我在某間小酒吧演出，正在演奏搖擺樂，或者一些我真的很喜歡的音樂風格，但沒有人在注意聽我們演奏，大家都在看大銀幕上的棒球比賽。 我就想說「好吧，反正沒人在聽，我就把我昨天練功的招式都丟進去音樂吧。」而那時我只是胡亂的丟我練過的招式，並沒有在那個音樂裡面，我也沒有在聽其他音樂家演奏了什麼，不過也許其他音樂家有聽到我做的事情。

後來，當我幸運地得到了更多演出機會，而這些場合開始需要更高的難度，我了解到我的專心程度並不足以支撐這些高強度的場合。

舉例來說，當我在九零年代晚期開始跟Niels Pedersen一起做巡迴，那是個非常高強度的演奏，它是個三重奏，每次演出的晚上，我的腦袋好像快爆炸一樣，因為我並不習慣如此需要長時間專注程度的高難度演出，我才了解到我浪費了太多時間以前演奏的時候沒有把專注力放在音樂上。

我覺得，如果你有兩隻手、兩隻腳、而且可以演奏樂器，你已經夠幸運了。而我認為如果你現在正在某間酒吧、某個餐館、或是某個婚禮場作演出，而你可以把每一場演出當作好像是全世界最棒的演出、在最大、最美麗的場館，跟著最棒的音樂家一起演出，那我認為你正走在對的路上。因為你有把你的心放在音樂裡面，而且你給這些音樂跟音樂家他們所渴望的最棒的尊重，那麼我可以向你保證接下來會有很棒的事情降臨在你身上。

這就是我想說的，非常謝謝你們今晚的蒞臨，希望我們下次可以再見。

註一：原文是說演奏「La Mecarena」，９０年代的當紅歌曲。這邊為了年輕讀者，使用較貼近現在的105度C的你。

註二：Niels Pedersen 全名是 Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (N.H.O.P.)，是從70-90年代活躍的傳奇的低音提琴手，演奏速度可以超級超級快又具備非常豐富的音樂性。

Recently I found a picture that my favorite drummer
Antonio Sanchez and his band "Migration" touring in Taipei in 2017. And few years ago I've seen his DVD and felt so inspired from these words. I decided to translate it into Chinese to share with other Chinese drummers.

There's maybe little mistakes because English is not my mother language.

Some wise words from my all-times favorite drummer Antonio Sanchez from his DVD - "Master Series".

And the last things I wanna said, hmm, has a lot to do with attitude to work with music and musicianships. Hmm, When I was growing up, I was always dreaming of playing in a nice, tall, the biggest stadium and the biggest band with the greatest musicians in this world. And that’s great except that we all have to start somewhere. And I, all of a sudden, I was playing in a little bar, or small pub, or some restaurant, or a wedding where nobody was paying an attention. And I really felt depressed and I felt violated. And for example, I’ve been played for a wedding gig, and I would be playing “La Marcaena” for a hundred times , and I would be like “What am I doing here ?”, “Get me out of here, shoot me, this is not for me, I’m so much better than this !”
And I was not putting my heart into it at all. When the next day, I would play in some small bar, I was playing maybe swing or something that I really like, but nobody was paying an attention. Everybody was looking at the screen, the baseball game. And I would be like “Well, nobody is paying an attention, then I just gonna playing practice whatever I was working on yesterday.” And I was NOT in the moment, I was not listening to what the other guys were playing. And maybe the other guys were listening to me.

So, when I luckily started getting better and better opportunities music-wise, and the situations start getting a little more the manling. I realized that I did not have the concentration I took for me to be able to deal with some of the situations. Uh, for example when I started to play with Niels Pedersen in the late 90s, it was a very tense gig , it was just a trio, and every night I would end would headache , because I was not used to have a lot of concentration and focusing that much, for that amount of time.
I realize that I’ve wasted a lot of time not being into the music not putting my heart into it. Because, I mean I really feel like if a, you have two arms, two legs, and you are able to play , you are lucky already. And I think if you are playing in some small restaurant, or wedding, or whatever. You treat that situation like the best gig in the world in the most beautiful opera house or the biggest stadium, and you treat you felt the musicians like the greatest musicians you could play with. I think you are on the right path. You put your heart into it, and you give the music and musicians the respect they deserved. Then I can assure you really good things are gonna happen to you. So that’s it for me, thank you so much for coming, hope see you next time.

最近，我在「TIME時代」雜志的專欄文章裡，向全球的讀者介紹了大陸「世界工廠」的+AI自動化升級。隨著勞動力成本的上漲，工業自動化、智慧化勢必是大陸製造業的一劑特效藥。自動化能讓運營成本下降，但仍能讓中國大陸保持生產品質、流程、供應鏈維度的優勢。AI賦能產業升級的願景或許還需多年才能實現，但當下的大陸已經讓未來可期。

「中國世界工廠 + AI 的未來」

多年來，中國大陸一直被喻為「世界工廠」，即便在全球其他經濟體紛紛遭遇新冠疫情重擊的2020年，大陸製造產業仍然維持穩健的增長范式，全年產值高達3.854萬億美元，占到全球市場近三分之一。

但如果你腦中的大陸工廠是傳統的「血汗工廠」，是時候修正你的刻板印象了。大陸經濟已經迅速地從疫情衝擊下復蘇，疫情同時催化了各種各樣人工智慧（AI）的應用場景加速實現。自2014年以來，中國大陸的AI專利申請量已經超越美國，至今維持全球領先。在學術領域，中國大陸的AI研究論文發表數量、AI期刊的引用量，也雙雙在近年超過了美國。在產業方面，AI應用在大陸的落地速度超越世界其他國家和地區，具有商業價值的AI應用如今開始百花齊放，整合了軟體、硬體和機器人技術的新一代自動化揭開序曲，AI賦能傳統行業的能量，正在蓄勢待發地重塑各行各業。

人類社會至今經歷了三次不同的工業革命：蒸汽革命、電力革命和資訊革命。我相信，AI將會是推動全球第四次工業革命的核心引擎，在世界各地點燃數位化和自動化的變革，而這波前所未有的硬科技浪潮，將由中國來引領實踐。

由於勞動人口減少和新增人口放緩，中國大陸的傳統產業正面臨著勞動力成本上升的巨大壓力，AI正是解決這個難題的技術解答。人工智慧不僅能夠降低運營成本，提高生產效率，擴大整體產能，還有望能帶來收入的增長。

例如，創新工場投資的廣州極飛科技是一家致力於未來農業的AI科技公司，極飛將無人機、機器人和感測器部署在稻田、麥田和棉花田裡，用技術賦能農業中的播種、農藥噴灑、栽種管理、甚至天氣監測環節。用於作物噴灑的極飛科技R150農業無人車已經被推廣到了英國，應用在蘋果、草莓、黑莓等多種經濟作物的種植流程中。

一些大陸的創新公司正積極把機器人拓展到意想不到的場景。總部位於北京的鎂伽是創新工場投資的生命科學智慧自動化公司，他們和實驗室、製藥公司、高校合作，憑藉AI+機器人技術的積累，用自動化解決方案執行實驗室中勞動密集、重複性高、但需要高度精確的任務和流程，同時機器人作業也將盡最大可能保護實驗室人員降低實驗過程中的感染風險。

除了創業公司，我們看到幾家成熟的龍頭企業也開始積極擁抱AI。創新工場參與了有28年歷史的中力電動叉車，這家頭部的鋰電叉車製造商已經推出了能夠在工廠、倉庫自主運行的無人叉車，並且無需對運行環境進行改造，能快速實現從手動到電動到自動駕駛的搬運賦能創新。此外，擁有50多年歷史的領先客車製造商-宇通集團，與自動駕駛獨角獸企業-文遠知行戰略合作，已在大陸三個城市的馬路上運行全無人駕駛小巴。

接著會發生什麼？我大膽預見，在更長遠的未來，機器人和AI將接管大多數產品的製造、設計、交付甚至營銷——很可能將生產成本降低到和原物料成本相差無幾。未來的機器人有能力自我複製和自我修復，甚至做到部分自我反覆運算設計。房屋和公寓將交由AI主導設計，使用預製建築模塊，交由機器人像搭積木似地築樓蓋房。無人公交、無人摩托等隨傳隨到的自動化未來交通系統，能將我們安全無虞地送達想去的地方。

這些願景成為現實或許還需要多年，但此時的大陸正在積極鋪墊引領新一代自動化革命的基石。可期的是，中國工廠的實力將不僅僅體現在產能上，而將逐步彰顯在智慧上。

China Is Still the World's Factory — And It's Designing the Future With AI

For many years now, China has been the world’s factory. Even in 2020, as other economies struggled with the effects of the pandemic, China’s manufacturing output was $3.854 trillion, up from the previous year, accounting for nearly a third of the global market.

But if you are still thinking of China’s factories as sweatshops, it’s probably time to change your perception. The Chinese economic recovery from its short-lived pandemic blip has been boosted by its world-beating adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). After overtaking the U.S. in 2014, China now has a significant lead over the rest of the world in AI patent applications. In academia, China recently surpassed the U.S. in the number of both AI research publications and journal citations. Commercial applications are flourishing: a new wave of automation and AI infusion is crashing across a swath of sectors, combining software, hardware and robotics.

As a society, we have experienced three distinct industrial revolutions: steam power, electricity and information technology. I believe AI is the engine fueling the fourth industrial revolution globally, digitizing and automating everywhere. China is at the forefront in manifesting this unprecedented change.

Chinese traditional industries are confronting rising labor costs thanks to a declining working population and slowing population growth. The answer is AI, which reduces operational costs, enhances efficiency and productivity, and generates revenue growth.

For example, Guangzhou-based agricultural-technology company XAG, a Sinovation Ventures portfolio company, is sending drones, robots and sensors to rice, wheat and cotton fields, automating seeding, pesticide spraying, crop development and weather monitoring. XAG’s R150 autonomous vehicle, which sprays crops, has recently been deployed in the U.K. to be used on apples, strawberries and blackberries.

Some companies are rolling out robots in new and unexpected sectors. MegaRobo, a Beijing-based life-science automation company also backed by Sinovation Ventures, designs AI and robots to safely perform repetitive and precise laboratory work in universities, pharmaceutical companies and more, reducing to zero the infection risk to lab workers.

It’s not just startups; established market leaders are also leaning into AI. EP Equipment, a manufacturer of lithium-powered warehouse forklifts founded in Hangzhou 28 years ago, has with Sinovation Ventures’ backing launched autonomous models that are able to maneuver themselves in factories and on warehouse floors. Additionally Yutong Group, a leading bus manufacturer with over 50 years’ history, already has a driverless Mini Robobus on the streets of three cities in partnership with autonomous vehicle unicorn WeRide.

Where is all this headed? I can foresee a time when robots and AI will take over the manufacturing, design, delivery and even marketing of most goods—potentially reducing costs to a small increment over the cost of materials. Robots will become self-replicating, self-repairing and even partially self-designing. Houses and apartment buildings will be designed by AI and use prefabricated modules that robots put together like toy blocks. And just-in-time autonomous public transportation, from robo-buses to robo-scooters, will take us anywhere we want to go.

It will be years before these visions of the future enter the mainstream. But China is laying the groundwork right now, setting itself up to be a leader not only in how much it manufactures, but also in how intelligently it does it.

Finally I had tried to record online. Out of the blue, the quality was acceptable!
Mr. Bigxin decided to quit school before he soon graduated, focusing on social media management. Owning over 5,000 fans within one year, he was invited to give a speech about slides to enterprises and campuses! Recently, he has brought a group of excellent creators together to start an impressive FB group: BXTeam!
One day I recommended the group to Passion, a new youtuber, and then she was surprised that Mr. Bigxin and I were acquainted and said that she wanted to meet Mr. Bigxin because she admired his aesthetic and logical works. Seeing her glowing eyes, I decided to make her dream come true, so I invited her to interview Mr. Bigxin together. After the interview, Passion kept saying that it was her pleasure to take part in the interview because his experience was extremely helpful.
I believe the episode is helpful to people who want to manage social media. Thank Mr. Bigxin for generously sharing his experience of managing social media and finding his way to turn defeat into inspirational stories!
Few days ago, I asked Mr. Bigxin for some tips of making slides. He not only told me his tips but shared a toolkit, which has everything, to me! He’s definitely a creator willing to share~

記得大一北上讀大學時，我常因想家、想爸媽偷偷在被子裡哭，當時D床的雲林女孩常攀越床板爬來C床，輕聲溫柔地放了包衛生紙在我的枕頭邊。外宿的記憶隨著日子更迭，默默堆疊；隨時年紀增長，越發增多。

到底一個人住好，還是兩人或以上住好？

過往我一直是喜歡與人相處的陽光個性，但近日搬入女生宿舍後，我才發現自己多麼需要獨處與安靜！！！面對每日生活、休閒、作息、喜好的關切與目光，真讓我好想轉身縮進後方的殼，但一回眸才發現背後空蕩蕩。

然而，兩個人大多時候比一個人好的，因為人本來就需要團隊、需要扶持、需要愛與接納，很開心擁有熱情的新室友們，希望北漂的孩子都跟我們一樣找到好室友、好房子，最最最重要能擁有平安與歸屬感的「家」！

補充：跟新室友們在家裡錄Podcast回音很大，加上天氣熱開了冷氣，真的有點吵，但內容保證輕鬆好笑！希望大家聽完心情愉悅！

When I, as a freshman, flew the nest, I often hid and cried in the quilt due to homesick. The girl from Yunlin often climbed over the bed board, putting down tissue gently beside my pillow.
Memories of living in the dorm are more and more.
Living alone or living with others, which one is better?

I acknowledged myself as a people person in the past. But recently I moved into the new house, I found that how much I needed to stay alone!!!
Facing interpersonal pressure,I want to escape my everyday life, but looking back I find nothing.

However, being with others is usually better than being alone. We all need team, supports, love and acceptance. So glad that I have new roommates.
Hope you, flying the nest like us, find good roommates and house, and most importantly, have peace and "home"!

p.s. Echoes of podcasting are loud in the house. In addition we turn on the air conditioner, so it's noisy a lot, but the content is funny. You have my word! Hope you are pleased after listening!

前陣子因為疫情關係買了Netflix。

但為了避免自己過太廢，所以規定自己只能看十集以內的劇，免得因為看劇變成一灘爛泥耽誤生活(當然已經破戒這只是安慰自己……)。這次跟大家分享的《火神的眼淚》與《我是遺物整理師》分別是台灣、韓國2021年5月同期推出的職人劇，都是十分滿分的十集劇喔！

兩部劇都是從「大眾不熟悉甚至有很多誤解的職業」切入，進而帶出複雜、值得深思的社會議題。

很多時候，我若只站在自己的角度去思考、只相信眼睛看到的，很容易被現象界蒙蔽，試著把眼睛閉起來，學會「用心」去溝通、傾聽，那麼人與人的心就會更靠近。

世界好複雜，但我們永遠可以選擇多一點真誠、尊重與擁抱！歡迎帶包衛生紙，一起來了解這兩部賺人熱淚的好劇吧！

Welcome to Sunlight~
Recently, I subscribed to Netflix due to Level 3 COVID-19 alert.
To avoid becoming a couch potato, I restrict myself to watch dramas which are within 10 episodes, or I'll waste too much time in them(Of course I break the rule so it's only for comforting myself......).
Topic today, "Tears on Fire" and "Move to Heaven" are Taiwanese and Korean drama of craftsmen, respectively, released in May, 2021.
They're ten out of ten, with 10 episodes!
The two dramas draw on occupation that the public is unfamilliar with or even misunderstands, and then bring out some social issues.
Most of the time, if I don't think in a different light and only believe visible things, I'll be blinded by material universe.
Try to close your eyes, and use your heart to communicate and listen to others, so that our hearts can be closer.
The world is not simple, but we can always be sincere, respectful and embrace everyone's differences more!
Prepare a box of tissues, and watch the two tear-jerker dramas!
