The other day at the end of class, a student asked if he could ask me a question that was unrelated to the lesson. I said of course and he asked whether I know about the Stop Asian Hate Movement. Naturally I did so he proceeded and asked "why do people in America hate Asians so much right now?" I answered "cause COVID started in Asia and they think that Asians are to blame for everything that they are going through right now." He paused and said "but... that doesn't make any sense." To which I replied "well, none of the hate crimes and discrimination make any sense, do they?"
He is a university student but I felt that his response was so pure it was almost like a kid, and it made me sad.
This isn't a 'Merica problem or a Trump problem. It is about everyone who thinks the same. Everyone should analyze if oneself has become or aided the perpetrators.
No matter who one is or where one is from, Asian or not, if they have ever said or done anything due to COVID, to verbally or physically abuse, blame, hurt, or exclude Asians, Chinese (Hua-ren), people from China, people from WuHan, or any member of the APPI community, then they are no better than the Americans beating up Asian elderlies.
