    是真材實料還是對嘴天王？

    80年代末，來自德國的雙人組合米利瓦尼利（Milli Vanilli）紅遍全球，一首“Girl You Know It's True”奠定他們在流行歌壇的地位。1989年，兩人受邀在美國現場演唱成名曲時，在其中一段歌詞鬼打牆，不斷重複唱著“Girl, you know it's..."。團員之一的羅伯．皮拉特斯（Rob Pilatus）拔腿衝下舞台⋯⋯

    這只是一連怪事的其中之一，在這之前，MTV總監貝絲．麥卡錫-米勒（Beth McCarthy-Miller）就已經提出疑問。她指出這兩位歌手的歐洲口音這麼重，而且英語能力奇差無比，為何可以一上台就轉變成流利自如的美國腔？但即便是上述的舞台事故，兩人都順利過關，多數歌迷仍然深信他們是真的具有演唱實力。

    1990年，米利瓦尼利更榮獲葛萊美獎最佳新人獎，再登巔峰。不過也在同年11月，他們的製作人法里恩（Frank Farian）正式出來面對，承認這兩位歌手「從來沒有演唱過專輯裡的任何一首歌」，並坦承所有的現場演出，「全部是對嘴」。此消息震撼歌壇，這個對嘴天團，竟成功矇騙全球歌迷長達三年之久。

    不過兩位歌手費柏．莫凡（Fab Morvan）與羅伯．皮拉特斯也很快出面喊冤，說他們並非想要做假，而只是單純在履行法里恩的合約，他們形容這是一個「與魔鬼的交易」。事實上，之所以事情會演變至此，也是因為他們想要爭取「真唱」，加上背後代唱者有意放話的傳聞，迫使法里恩只好攤牌認錯。

    其實真正的幕後代唱者是約翰．戴維斯（John Davis）與布萊德．豪威爾（Brad Howell）。其中戴維斯是一個1970年代隨美軍來德國駐紮的道地美國人，他說法里恩一開始只是要他去錄音室錄製歌曲，結果後來有一天他在家看到電視，發現自己的聲音居然出現在米利瓦尼利的MV之中。儘管如此，他從中獲取了天價報酬（包括封口費），可以過著衣食無缺的平凡生活。

    不出意料，這座葛萊美獎最佳新人獎的榮譽立刻遭到褫奪。不過更麻煩的是，不少受騙的歌迷／消費者紛紛提告，要求退回購買CD和演唱會門票。最終雙方達成協議，共有一千萬人獲得退款的資格。米利瓦尼利從萬民擁戴的偶像成為過街老鼠，他們在1993年以真聲推出新專輯，僅賣出兩千張。在1998年，兩人與當初拆他們台的法里恩再次合體，但同年四月，羅伯．皮拉特斯因為用藥過量暴斃在法蘭克福。米利瓦尼利的復出宣告失敗。

    然而，隨著新世紀到來，米利瓦尼利的故事已經變成一個傳奇趣聞，他們的代表作“Girl You Know It's True”也依然享有盛名。在2015年，幕後代唱的約翰．戴維斯與正牌團員費柏．莫凡合體登上電視節目演唱，受到熱烈歡迎。一部關於這個團體的紀錄短片《Milli Vanilli: From Fame to Shame》在2016年問世，與其名曲同名的紀錄片《Girl You Know It's True》目前也尚在製作中。

    曾執導《尖峰時刻 Rush Hour》系列的導演布萊特．拉特納（Brett Ratner）原先預定要將米利瓦尼利的真實故事拍成劇情片，已經箭在弦上，但因為他被指控性侵、性騷擾多名女性，該製作案目前延宕中。

    遺憾的是，幕後代唱的約翰．戴維斯將無法看見自己的故事被搬上大銀幕，他在罹患COVID-19之後辭世，享壽66歲。
