日前在書林出版社買了兩本小書，其一是 Jerome Agel 的《Test your word
power》，是本英文書，但出版社將之中文書名取為《英文字彙能力測驗》，
並加了聳動的小標「熟讀本書─字彙考試無往不利！」，也許這需要一點時
間來證明吧。

裡頭除了一回一回的字彙測驗外，中間會穿插幾則有趣的短文，多半也與字
彙有關，最近讀到了一則，頗有感覺，發篇文以饗版友。女孩子可以想一下
這篇文章。

To the Greeks, chaos was primeval matter in total disorder.
Cosmos, on the other hand, was the same matter in some apperance
of order.

The creation of the universe, then, was not the creation of
matter; that already existed. It was the creation of order.

matter originally in disorder is cosmetic.

cosmetics to make up her face.


是不是記起 chaos 和 cosmos 這兩個單字了呢？額外的，我們學會了衍生
字 chaotic, cosmetic, cosmetics，而我們也瞭解到化妝品的用途，與素
顏的可貴:)


第二本小書是 Norman Schur 的《1000 Most important words》，一樣是
外國人編寫的，中文書名取做《1000 個最重要英文字彙》，小標是「掌握
最難纏的一千個英文字彙！」。這本書讓我想到許章真的《最重要的一百
個字根字首》一書 (同樣是書林出版)，我想任何一個編者在編錄字彙書或
字根字首書之前，想必也是將前人的著作博覽熟讀後，才有辦法在腦海中
勾勒屬於自己的獨到創見吧。

我想分享的是 pedestrian 這個詞，程度不錯的同學知道他是名詞「行人」
的意思，但 GRE 考這個詞卻是考它的形容詞意，「平淡的、缺乏想像力的
」，通常用來形容文章。此字收錄在《Barron's How to prepare for the
GRE》一書中的 The 3,500-word master word list，節錄如下：

pedestrian ADJ. ordinary; unimaginative. Unintentionally boring,
he wrote page after page of pedestrian prose.

接下來節錄這本小書關於此字的介紹：

pedestrian adj. We are familiar with this word as a noun
describing a person going on foot. The adjective means "
commonplace, dull, unimaginative." The concept of going on foot
is extended, in the figurative use of the adjective, to "plodding."
A pedestrian approach to a problem leaves little room for a
creative solution. Some books are loaded with pedestrian passages
that stop the flow of action. From Latin pedester (on foot)

如何從 pedestrian 的名詞義想到其形容詞的象徵義呢？當然小書裡有提示
，但我個人的記法是去聯想大都市裡人口密集處的行人 (當然是個人經驗，
僅供參考)，我有兩個畫面，一是尖峰時刻的台北車站捷運站 B1 不同路線之
接駁處，二是假日晚間的師大夜市巷口，在兩三百個同時穿梭的行人中，我
看到的是 (包括我自己在內) 渙散的眼神與無創造力的氛圍，此一微妙的時
刻，我看到的是非洲草原上移動的獸群，差別只在有無裸露而已。

總之，我看到 pedestrian 這個字，會連結到那數百隻眼睛的目光，於是乎
，這個字我一輩子都不會忘記。
