THE TRAP OF COMPARISON

I remember one time when I was in first grade, my mother told me (jokingly, of course, but it still left a wound in my tender 6-year-old heart):

“The neighbor’s daughter has better grades than you. Maybe I should trade you for her instead.”

At that moment, my mind formed a limiting belief: If others are better than me, there will be less love for me.

In a desperate effort to get love, I subconsciously followed that belief for more than 20 years, trying to be an overachiever, all the time keeping vigilant watch at others’ achievement.

I was successful on the outside, but on the inside, I was a wreck. Worse, I was deeply lonely. (It’s hard to make friends when you’re so scared of their success!)

The more we think these thoughts, the smaller we feel.

This thought pattern might have been developed since your childhood, if your parents, like mine, often compared you with others.

What I learned, the hard way was that when you try to be better than others, you forget to be what you’re best at: yourself.

Some are lucky enough to identify it right away. Many take a bit longer to discover.

I’m naturally an impatient person. It stems from being a perfectionist and overachiever. But I know this about myself and am taking steps to change my tendency to make snap judgments or criticize (both myself and others).

The older I get, I’m realizing that in order to be truly great at anything, one must be patient, trust the process, and put in the time. Here are my tips. I hope you find them useful. 😊

- Make time to work on yourself, physically, mentally and emotionally.
- Pick something and focus your attention on it until you master it.
- Practice daily.
- Don’t expect shortcuts.
- Be willing to fail. Over and over and over.
- Trust the process.

In the end, the one who can harness the power of patience and stand the test of time, will emerge a true warrior.

Say hi to Nicholas! He’s 21, is a competitive martial artist and USED to be shy🕺 Nicholas is one of our Performing Arts Certificate students and has been joining our classes for the last few months.

With Zoom classes, Nicholas describes that he’s more comfortable, because he’s in his room, in his own home. He’s a self-confessed overachiever and is challenging himself to take the FULL course, and hopefully someday become a professional singer-dancer-actor. We’re behind him all the way, to help him achieve his dreams!
