I did a few test box pleats by eye to let its weight hang correctly. My grandmother taught me sewing and I’ve been doing this since I was 9. She said that it’s all in the cutting and pinning. If you can’t get those 2 right, no point sewing it by hand or machine as it will be wrong and fit or fall poorly. Follow the flow of gravity. Many a disastrous project has arisen from poor cutting and pinning. Was intending to make 1950s full ballgown skirt originally but as not enough fabric, it will be short. All that’s required now is lining, waistband and zip. Just a quick trip to the treasure trove called eBay. Today I’m wearing a shirt I made from vintage Swiss cotton offcut with pearl buttons, cuffs, from a vintage 1950s torn pattern with missing instructions/parts. But luckily I was able to put the jigsaw together, wasn’t hard. The only thing I had to spend money on was the buttons. The fabric is a remnant given by my neighbour. It’s slightly sheer but quite stiff, so you have to wear a camisole under but you don’t need stiffener for the cuffs or collar because they’re stiff already. This charming coffee shop, just round the corner (and tucked in an alley - exactly how I like it) from Nijō Castle. Loved all the little details, from the warm water the barista pours as you peruse the menu, the leather offcut coasters, the old school kettles on a gas stove for the drip coffee, right down to the selection of soft music in the background. Was lucky enough to have the space all to myself when I visited and loved every second of it. 🖤
