1️⃣ “Olympics, the most glamorous stage for athletes around the world, is the place where dreams are expressed and cherished.”
📌 首先用”the most glamorous…”
Olympics, is the most glamorous stage for athletes around the world, the place where dreams are expressed and cherished.”,咁你刪除兩個逗號之間嘅時候就會發現”Olympics the place where…”
2️⃣ “Yet behind the dazzling halo of outstanding sportsmen, are people of all races, occupations, statuses and religions, united together to make Tokyo Olympics come true before our eyes.”
📌 呢句我就會改少少,我會將”are”同埋”united”前面嘅逗號刪走,變成前半句一個prepositional clause加後半句main clause “people of all (n.-subject) …united (v.)”
4️⃣ “…despite of all difficulties and doubts on hosting the gargantuan event under Covid circumstances, Japan offered the athletes a safe and comfortable place to compete.”
💡記住despite, despite, despite! in spite of, in spite of, in spite of!
但除此之外,要跟noun phrase ”all difficulties and doubts” 呢點係用得非常正確!
5️⃣ “…and without these people, my dream would never have come true.”
呢度佢用咗”would have + past participle”呢種 hypothetical past 嘅句子💡

When day comes we ask ourselves,
where can we find light in this never-ending shade?
For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it
If only we’re brave enough to be it
★★★★★★★★★★★★
We’ve braved the belly of the beast
We’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace
或:
That even as we grieved, we grew
That even as we hurt, we hoped
That even as we tired, we tried
1. we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one
2. We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west,
3. we will rise from the windswept northeast
where our forefathers first realized revolution
4. We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states,
5. we will rise from the sunbaked south
6. We will rebuild, reconcile and recover
MLK 的演講:NOT FREE vs. FREE
Michelle Obama 最有名的演講: when they go LOW, we go HIGH
Amanda Gorman
That even as we GRIEVED, we GREW
That even as we HURT, we HOPED
That even as we TIRED, we TRIED

“Here’s to freedom, to equality, and to natural rights. Cheers to movies, to arts, and to our lives.”
“Here’s to freedom, cheers to art. Here’s to having an excellent adventure, and may the stopping never start.”

可以講 an #ask、a #tell,係名詞
//明報英文 | 毛孟靜
To ask、to tell I will ASK him to TELL me about it.
Is that too much to ask?
* I just want you to be on time. Is that too much to ask? 我不過想你準時,這要求過份嗎?
而to tell,亦可解作to have an effect(產生效果):
* She's been under a lot of stress and it's starting to tell. 她一直承受頗多壓力,後遺症開始浮現。
而把ask 和 tell 變做名詞,成為an ask、a tell,又是另一個故事了。
今日的an ask,基本上等於 a request,一項請求。
* I realise it's a big ask, but I hope you can do it.
* It is a big ask for him to go and stand there for 90 minutes.
《牛津字典》說,ask 在新時代作為名詞,通常前面會加 big、huge 或tough 一類的形容詞,意思係something that is a lot to ask of someone(對人有過份要求),或something difficult to achieve(難以滿足的要求),如同文首的Is that too much to ask?
There was the tell-tale bulge of a concealed weapon in his pocket.
另有 a tell in poker,是指玩撲克——又叫 show hand(「沙蟹」)——之際,神色姿態露出端倪,讓對家知道底牌。
* I never played poker, so I never learned to read a tell.
* A player gains an advantage if he understands the meaning of another player's tell.
* I looked for a gesture, a tone of voice, a "tell" that would tell if he was the killer. //
