I was awakened by a phone call from my mum on that early morning hours about two weeks ago. In her distant, muffled voice she broke the news about my uncle's passing. I didn't how to respond. I just didn't know how.
My late uncle, Kamel Ali or Cikmen as he is fondly called, was that jovial and sporting uncle who everyone wish they have. He was always the merrymaker during any family occasion. A chatterbox. He would be the first to greet you, he was always chatting with people, he was always teasing his nephews and nieces, making small, silly jokes and all. Underneath all that he was really a person with a silent intelligence. He was also constantly the one who led us in our solat during family gatherings
I wanted to write about him earlier, but I just couldn't bring myself to do so.
During my school days in boarding school, it was him (along with other uncles) that my mum entrusted me with. In the early stage during my time there he was the one who took me out to buy my essential needs. Later on, I also tagged along on his dates with his (then girlfriend) wife.
After I got married, he was always teasing me with my husband be it during family gatherings or in family group on social media. He was really excited when he got to know that one of my daughters secured a job related to palm oil and palm trees because he used to be in that line. That was one of my last conversation that I had with him.
Cikmen, I miss you, your smile, your regular religious reminder but most of all your cheerful demeanor 😭
Al-Fatihah.
