I hope everyone is snuggled up safe, in contact with their family and loved ones, and staying as comfortable as possible during this tough time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I spent the morning talking to my family back in Canada, and we had a good conversation about mental health and sanity during a crisis. I have a few thoughts I want to share. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Social distancing is not the same as total isolation or quarantine. Unless you live in a country where you are not permitted to go outside, you can, in fact, go outside. It is OK to take a solo walk, sit in the sun, get some fresh air, and enjoy the peace and quiet away from your TV and news feeds. For those of us who struggle with extreme anxiety, this is amazing medicine. Schedule time when you can tune it all out. I've been thinking about going back on lexapro to deal with the pressure of uncertainty, but early morning dog walks have helped keep things under control. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (Keep distance from other people as much as possible though, for their benefit too. Wash your hands, be aware of what you've touched and how many other people may have touched it -- money is a big one. There are smart ways to do this.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. We are all at risk, and this is something we should be aware of, but if you're feeling like you're losing control, there are many things we can do to decrease it (avoiding the sick, wearing masks, washing hands, staying home if you feel unwell). Practice as many as you can. I know disease can be a panic trigger, but just like we look both ways before crossing a street to avoid being hit by a car, there are things we can do to decrease risk to ourselves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. This is a tough time economically and many of us are feeling the effects in one way or another. Handle the problems of the day, try to be "present", and don't spend too much time worrying about the problems of the future, if you can. Considering how much has changed in a single week, we really don't know what the future will look like, try to take things a day at a time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4. Be kind to each other. It's easy to be angry and snappy and aggressive right now, but we need to be compassionate, share support and be positive. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hang in there ♥️
