As they have been living off dwindling savings, food aid from charities organizations and kindly neighbors who occasionally offer provisions. The family's favorite foods — fried chicken, eggs, fruit and bread — are now out of their budget. They eat mainly beans. They can afford a small amount of chicken but give most of it to their daughter. On a personal note, Ali shares he longs for the taste of Kentucky Fried Chicken (@kfcmalaysia) Sometimes, he says, he thinks about moving to Milwaukee, United States of America. Part 2/3 • They Could Put Food On The Table — Until The Pandemic Struck. Mohd Ali, 32, and his wife came to Malaysia in 2015 to escape the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar. In this special report and photo series on food insecurity for @NPR, Ali invited me to his kitchen as he prepares a dish his mother taught him: a mix of rice, lentils, curry, chopped long beans and chili powder. "Let my wife rest today. I will cook and show you!" he says. What's most important to him, he says, is taking care of his pregnant wife (currently in 2nd trimester) and 6-year-old daughter. Part 1/3 • They Could Put Food On The Table — Until The Pandemic Struck. Sharing a latest published work on food insecurity in different parts of the world with fellow @everydayeverywhere photographers for @npr When the pandemic hit, the national armed forces put up barbed wire fences around Mohd Ali's neighborhood in Selayang, a town in Gombak District, Selangor, Malaysia. With the intention to restrict movement and prevent COVID-19 transmission. Mohd Ali, 32, used to earn $10-12 a day and could support his family. As weeks galloped by, the fence made it impossible to get to his job as a restaurant dishwasher. After a cycle of lockdowns, the restaurant closed down. Ali eventually lost his job as a restaurant dishwasher, where he can no longer afford meat, fruit, bread and eggs he used to buy for his family. Since then, finding new job to support his family has been difficult as well.
