// Bilinguals regulate, or suppress, their native language when reading in a second language.

Some proficient second-language readers can actively predict the meaning of upcoming words, and even quickly adapt when their predictions are wrong, just like their monolingual peers.

Bilinguals acquire the skills to navigate the complexity of the language environment in ways that may enable them to solve basic language problems . . . Those skills go beyond resolving simple conflict between the two languages. //

I was originally apprehensive about speaking about gender equality at an event yesterday, because nobody wants/needs to be mansplained to, especially when it comes to issues related to gender. But it occurred to me that gender equality requires the efforts of all genders, and I can certainly lend my voice as an ally. I ended up speaking about how the process of an interview can empower the interviewee. But even more interesting was the speech by Chao Hsin, a talented Peking opera actor, who spoke about his experience playing women's roles. "You should work with what you have, rather than trying to become someone else," he said. He mentioned a concept which can be loosely translated as "forgetting the outside world and forgetting yourself", which is the key for men playing female roles in traditional theater.

That's actually not so far off from what I do when I'm interviewing someone. Sure, I may be a man, but when I'm immersed in an interview, I'm just a person who is curious, empathic, and seeking to bridge the gap between you and me.

Special thanks to the Garden of Hope Foundation, which does fantastic work for women in need, and to the American Institute in Taiwan and to the New Taipei City Government for holding the event and inviting me to speak. <3
